THE WAYNESV1LLE MOUNTAINEER
fTin, Important Metal,
Has Many Uses in World
Tin is one of the most important
iof all the metals and plays a leading
!role in civilization. In some respects
this is the see of tin, declares a writer
in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The drama of tin is presented daily
in some form each of .the 4 hours. It
ornaments the millionaire': palace and
brings comfort to the humblest home.
Research is extending its uses still
. further.
Tin is dislied up daily In newspapers.
Irtecanse type means tin, as well as
:in the kitchen, where it is found in
cooking utensils, in the tinfoil wrap
ping enmities forms of food not for
stettins the canned fruit or fish or Mye
litides which account for the hundreds
of millions of tin onus used every year
mid tons of tinplate for the world's
cooks. This list is almost endless, for
un is found In the telephone, radio,
motor car, typewriter and the electric
lltfht system. As an alloy it rules avl
Jition, transport, Kvland, fireworks and
marine engineering.
Bed springs are coated with tin to
prevent -rust. Tin salts are used to
Jiold loose silk fitters together.
Take the toilet. The bathtub Is
coated with oxydlzed tin. Tooth paste
comes out of a tin tube, Razors are
keen edged, thanks to tin, and the
same applies to scissors and other cut
'ting implements.
Busy Earth, Sun, Moon
Have Many Peculiarities
The sun Is a radiant globe about
S(M,100 miles In diameter. Its average
distance from the earth Is 9l',8!7.400
miles. Its density Is about one and a
.'half times that of water. The moon's
diameter Is about 2,102 miles. Its av
erage distance front the earth Is 238,857
miles. Its density Is about 3.41 times
that of waler.
The sun's chemical constitution,
notes a writer In the Indianapolis
''News, is doubtless Identical with that
of the earth, but so hot that it remains
gaseous, in spile of the enormous pres
sure exei'led by the mutual attraction
of its particles.
The moon, which is the earth's only
satellite, revolves round the earth from
'west to east In a period of about 27.lt
jlays. Its period from full moon to
,ull moon, or the ordinary month, Is
inbont 2i).r days. The moon rotates on
fits axis' in the same direction that It
rrevolves round the earth, anil with
t;e same regular velocity. The result
Lis that It always keeps the same face
ttoward the earth. The moon shines
entirely by reflected light, and its
(phases depend upon its position rel
ntive to the earth and sun.
Earth's Temperature
The earth's teinyerature increases
rapidly below the first few thousand'
feet of the surface rock, reports the
New York Herald Tribune, Work com
pleted on the world's deepest hole,
a dry well drilled In Upton county,
Texas, reached a depth of 12,781!
feet. The temperature of the bottom
was 182 degrees Fahrenheit. At the
30,030 feet depth the temperature was
110 degrees, according to a communl-
cation to the editor of Mining and
Metallurgy. In the final 2,0tM) feet the
temperature rose degrees. In less
titan another 2,000 feet temperatures
high enough to boil water would he
encountered. It Is believed. It fre
quently lias been asserted that the
earth's Internal heat should give us
tin ample supply of heat energy, 'litis
hole reaches down to a source of the
lieat hut it is doubtful If the heat
could be drawn oft at a rapid enough
rate for any practical purpose.
The Leyden Jar
"Various forms of machines were de
veloped for the purpose of producing
electrification by means of friction. In
1700, Francis I lauksbee mounted a
glass globe on a shaft and geared It so
that it could he rotated at high speed.
Friction was produced by holding the
palm of the band on the spinning
globe. Such devices produced an elec
tric charge of considerable strength
which was, however, available only
when the machines were In operation.
About 1745, I'lwald George von Kleist
and Pleter van Mttsschenbroek, work
ing independently, performed experi
ments which led to the invention of
the "Leyden jar." This was a glass
vessel, with Inside and outside, coat
ings f lead, by means of which a
charge f electricity from a frletlonal
machine could be accumtilMted and
later released by making a connection
between the two coatings.
Mourning Dove Like Pigeon
The female mourning dove looks very
much like a pigeon. Her dress is dull
grayish browa or fawn colored, and
she lacks the coloring around the neck
which distinguishes ttte male. When
In repose the female is a flabby,
supine, shiftless-looking creature, bat
he Inspires one of the most famous
of all :blrd love calls. Perhaps the
male mourning dove Is inspired to his
plaintive call -in appreciation of the
refinement of his mate, for she Is
among the gentlest f birds.

Food Required by Snake
The majority f snakes In captivity
use live animals for food, and the
kind of animals to fee given depends on
the size f the snake. Small garter
snakes, 'blacksnakes nad similar spe
cies thrive on crickets, beetles, sm-tll
frogs, mice and the like. Bullsnakes,
pine-snakes, puffing adders and other
large-sized American species eat toads,
frogs, mice and insects; pythons, boas,
anacondas and very large snakes eat
rats, guinea pigs, rabbits or other fair
ly good-sized animals.

Milady's Chores Made Easy With

V'acuum Cleaners
When the vacuum cleaner came up
on the domestic scene to give the
broom its just desserts, housewives
were tot) delighted with this miracle-
worker to care about its looks. But
Mrs. America of 193(1 not only has
her household cleaning done for her
by the vacuum cleaner, but she has
a streamlined vacuum cleaner to do
it. In other words, the Royal Ameri
ca's fastest selling vacuum cleaner,
on the market to prove it.
In fact, Royal's streamline design
sets a new style in vacuum cleaners.
And these models not only present a
pleasing. picture to the eye. but they
fa routlast the vacuum cleaner of the
past.
Gliding almost noiselessly along
floor, carpet, or rug, the most fragile
antique may rest in its path in per
fect safety, for the absence of projecting-
parts prevents marring of fur
niture or catching in draperies.
Then, too, Royal Super Grand pre
sents for milady's convenience the fol
lowing four-star aids to an immaecu
late httme: (1) The patented bag, the
wide-hinged opening of which makes
it extremely easy to empty; (2) The
handle lock and tilting device which
locks the handle in any one of three
positions; (,'3) A handle grip that is a
still further improvement on previous
Royal handle designs. The Royal Su-
per Grand handle 0f Hwb fits the
hand naturally and comfortably, con
tributing greatly to the comfort of the
operator. A trigger switch is right at
the finger tips.
HEADLIGHT PENETRATES DARK
CORNERS
Other Royal features include a bril

beam on the surface being cleaned,
two speed motors for light and heavy
duty, both speeds controlled by the
Royal trigger switch; a nozzle guard
that simplifies the cleaning of small
rugs; and a new type of brush made
