THE C()l NTRY ( HI Kt II
It is not the actual church organ
ization, that is a body of believers,
but the church building and grounds
which we wish to discuss. The coin
ing of good loads and automobiles
have influenced not only the rural
homes but the churches. In the
horse and buggy days it was neces
sary to leave a good many trees about
on the grounds to be used for hitch
ing posts. Some of the more pro
gressive churches realizing that cars
will stand without hitching and that
they will neither paw up the ground
nor nibble the shrubbery, have clear
ed the ground in front of the build
ing and have established lawns. The
following formula for seed for mak
ing a good lawn was worked out by
Dr. Pillsbury of North Carolina State
College:
Good Better
Kentucky Blue Grass ...10 lbs. 15 lbs.
Rhode I. bent grass 10 lbs. 20 lbs.
Red Top grass ...... ...10 lbs. 20 lbs.
Red Fescue grass 10 lbs. 15 lbg.
English Rye grass 5 lbs. 10 lbs-.
White Dutch Clover . ... 5 lbs, 5 lbs
Total 50 lbs. 85 lbs.
In some instances a screen of na
tive trees has been planted on each
side of the church building. North
Carolina is rich in plant material
suitable for this purpose; dogwood,
red bud, wild crabapple, sour wood,
sassafras, sumac, mimosa and crepe
myrtle would be most attractive.
Holly trees and other evergreens are
desirable but cedars are not advised
if there are apple orchards nearby.
When transplanting magnolias and
holly, clip off all the leaves except a
few surrounding the bud. This pre
vents excessive evaporation.
The quick growing privet or hedge
plant is advised for planting to con
ceal the outdoor privies without
which ho country church is complete.
These should be built and maintained,
according to State Hoard, of Health
specifications and should be kept lock
ed except when the church is open
for services.
The days. are. gone when the mem
bers of a rural church fail to provide
a plentiful supply of tire wood, which
in the fall is stored under a conven
ient shelter. It is imnortaiil that the
drinking water be free from contain-!
illation. Many cases of typhoid fever i
have been traced to the open well of
the country church.
Have you tried the cafeteria plan of
serving dinner on the grounds ? The '
long table under the trees at the back)
of the church is covered with table
cloths as usual. The "customers '
form in two lines ort either side of
the table. First they drop a nickel in j
a convenient box, pick up a paper
plate and napkin, then help them
selves to bread and moat, pickles and
stuffed eggs, Next they come to the '
pie and custard section und the cake
division brings them to the end of the
long table. .lust a little distance
away is the beverage table. This is
usually taken care of by members of
the Women's Missionary Society.
Here lor five cents one may purchase
paper cups tilled with coffee, lemon
ade, sweet or butter milk.
The money taken at both hibles is
used to pay for the paper plates, cups
and napkins, the coffee, sugar, ice,
lemons, tinker's bread and cheese.
Open sandwiches Using jam, jelly,
preserves unit any' other tilling are
more acceptable than those covered
with another slice of bread, as any
one wishes to know at a glance just
what one is choosing. The younger
children wjio cannot handle plates
are not expected to pay, but are
served with food from the table. This
plan makes for smooth, efficient ser
vice and is no ta tax on anyone,
The one room country church is al
most a thing of the past. At least
two rooms have been added to most of
them. One is Used for the primary
class and the other contains a smalt
oil stove and a cot where mothers
may retire with their babies or for
the use of anyone who wishes to he
down. Surplus supplies are securely
locked in a large box or cupboard in
this room. Electric lights have been
installed in many of the larger
churches, where power lines pass and
others use the Delco or Acetylene
systems.
The name and denomination of the
church painted on a board placed near
the road in front of the church, would
prove interesting and helpful to trav
elers. M US. M1TTIE E. II EN LEY.
