The mule's name was placed on the ballot by Mayor Simmons of Milton who sought to demon strate the Inefficiency of the blanket primary system. Just about the size of crab apples, but a vastly different color. And probably a vastly different flavor, if we ever get around to sampling them. Such is the description for two dimin utive "second crop" apples brought to The Mountaineer office the other lay by R. Q. McCracken. Judge Bob says he picked 'em off a tree in his own yard on Main street, the tree being commonly known as the "Early Harvest" variety. The Mountaineer wonders !iow many other trees in Haywood county have showed up this season with a "second crop." NOTICE NORTH CAROLINA. HAYWOOD COUNTY. According to Tom Queen, Hazel wood councilman and one of Haywood county's best vocalists, this county was well represented Sunday when the Western Carolina Singing conven tion held its preliminary organiza tion meeting at Glenville school, near the head of the Tuckaseigee river, in Jackson county. Councilman Queen also is authority for the statement that the Ameri can Snuff company quartet, directed and accompanied on the piano by Sam Coalson,' of illazelwood, pro vided the 1,500 music lovers presen with some of the best entertainmen of the day. The quartet, composed of Haywood and Jackson county men (Vernon Holl, Grady Blanton, Raymond Blan ton and Bill Bryson) has been giving a good account if itself for some time and. the news that it was one of the outstanding musical organizations heard at Sunday's meet, will surprise nobody. All the counties in the Old North State from Haywood West are repre sented in this 'new-convention, James Ruby, of Franklin, was elected the fust president, and the second Sun day in September was agreed on as meeting date henceforth.
