MRS. JAMES F. DAVIS
Last rites were held on Monday
morning at 10 o'clock at the Pres
byterian church for Mrs. James
F. Davis, who died on Sunday morn
ing at 8:35 o clock at the Haywood
County Hospital. The Rev. R. P.
Walker officiated. Burial was tn
Green Hill cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were the
following: L. N. Davis, Hilliard
Matney, Bill Winchester, Frank
Compton, T. G. Stump, and Hayes
Alley.
Mrs. Davis was a native of this
county, and was before her mar
riage Miss Lillie Cagle. She has
resided here all her life.
Surviving are: her husband,
three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Cole,
of Pinehurst, Mrs. Fred McMahan,
of Greenville, S. C, and Mrs.
Grover Turner, of Lenoir; five sons,
Edgar, of Lenoir, Homer, of Green
ville, S. C, Mark, Lawrence, and
James, of Waynesville and Hazel
wood; two brothers, James and
David, of Waynesville.
G. FRANK JONES
Last rites were conducted at the
Garrett Funeral Home at 10 o'clock
on Saturday morning for G. Frank
Jones, 73, who died on Thursday
at the home of his nephew, Frank
Rush in the Mauney Cove. The
Rev. George Hammond, pastor of
the Presbyterian church of Canton,
officiated. Burial was in the cem
etery at Turpin's Chapel.
Serving as pallbearers were
Frank Wright, Lee Willis, Frank
Jones, Robert Jones, Hilliard
Jones, and Richard Jones.
Mr. Jones was a native of Bun
combe county, but had spent the
past forty-six years in Haywood
County, where he had been en
gaged in farming.
Surviving are: one son Garland
Jonea, of Gastonia; one daughter,
Mrs. Wiley Wright, of Canton;
three brothers, Wiley Jones, of
Etowah, Gus and Noah Jones f
Lake Toxaway.
Walter Herman Surrett
Funeral Services were held at 2
o'clock on Saturday afternoon at
the Bethel Baptist church in Bun
combe County for Walter Herman
Surrett, 20, who died at 6:30 p.
m. on Thursday in the Haywood
County Hospital. Burial was in
the church cemtery.
Surviving are his parents, Wil
liam H. and Leonia Sams Surrett,
of Canton, route 2; two brothers,
Ralph and Frank Surrett, of Can
ton route 1 and three sisters, Mrs.
Fred Suttles, of Henderson Coun
ty, Miss Inez and Miss Elsie Lee
Surrett, of route 2, Canton.
MRS. J. M. PENLAND
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the
Clyde Methodist Church for Mrs.
J. Mack Penland, 71, who died
Tuesday morning at her home in
Clyde, after an extended illness.
The Rev. W. M. Gerald, pastor of
the church, the Rev. W. H. Pless
and the Rev. E. C. Price officiated.
Burial was in the Pleasant Hill
cemetery near Clyde.
Nephews served as pallbearers

She is survived by seven children;
five daughters, Mrs. J. H. Stamey,
Mrs. V. H. Justice and Mrs. Hil
liard Underwood, of Clyde, and

Childress, of Canton; two sons, W.
G. Penland and Ted Penland, of
Winston-Salem; and 19 grandchil
dren. The Wells Funeral home of Can
ton was in charge of the arrangements.

School For Reserve
Officers In Asheville
Captain Wilfred Jacksqn con
ducted the troop school for re
serve officers in the U.,S. Army,
which was held on Wednesday
night in Asheville.
He had as his subject "Outposts."
At the conclusion of the lesson
the officers were invited to see
"The Fighting 69th."
