On a graceful half-moon bend of
the French Broad River opposite
Biltmore Estate, workmen are com
pleting the clearing and landscap
ing of half a mile of level land in
the construction of one of the
south's largest skeet shooting
fields. The work is being done in
preparation for the $5,000 "Land
of the Sky" National Open Skeet
Shoot for the world's open skeet
Championship to be held near Ashe-1
ville, July 31st and August 1st,
2nd and 3rd. ,
Trap houses constructed of na
tive logs gathered from the clear
ing operations on the land are
being erected and eight or more
shooting fields are being marked
off arid equipped to take care of
the 300 to 400 shooters expected
to take part in the National open
event.
On July 31st, colorful marquees
and lawn umbrellas will be erected
bv the scores to shelter shooters

PITTSBURGH Part of the Un!
versitv of Pittsburgh campus is lit
erally being "undermined," it was
discovered here.
An abandoned coal mine which
for vears has been burning be
neath a hill in the Oakland district
here, has broken through to the
surface not far from Pitt Stadium,
home field of the Pitt and Carnegie
Tech football teams.
The surface eruption is also
close to the foundation of Pitts
burgh's new municipal hospital
now in the process of construction.
City Works Director Frank M.
Roessing announced he is seeking
WPA co-oneration in an attempt
to seal the mine, and thus smother
