State Commander
Addresses Legion
District Meeting
"Today, as the selective service
lottery launched America's great
est peacetime preparedness pro
gram, we see the 21-ycar old pol
icy of the American Legion justi
fied, as the nation as a whole
finally wakes up to the absolute
necessity of an adequate defense,
if American way of life is to be
preserved," said R. Dave Hall, of
Belmont, State Commander of the
American Legioji, at the dinner
meeting of the 18th district held
here in the Legion home on Tues
day night.
Mr. Hall pointed out that while
the American Legion had been
greatly misunderstood for many
years, it was now being vindicat
ed in its ' fight for a program of
national defense. Often in the
past It hat been accused of wish
ing to foster an unnecessary spirit
of militarism out of keeping with
a peacetime policy.
"XnanK uoa, public sentiment
still governs America. Not only
however, has the Legion's national
defense program been justified, as
the country has also recently
awaked to the fact that there has
been adequate justification for the
Legion's long fight against the
subverts element in this nation.
Thomas M. Green, Of Oteen, dis
trict commander, presided. Among
other special guests of the meet
ing were: Bascom James, of Paris,
France, member of post number
one of the American Legion of that
city, who spoke briefly; Jim Cald
well, of Belmont, state adjutant,
Dr. I. R. Wagner, and Dr. C. L
Moore, both of Oteen Hospital.
Representatives from pous in
Asheville, Oteen, Canton, and Mc
Dowell as well as a number from
the local group attended the meet
ing, bringing the attendance to ap
proximately 90.
