Jack ' Messer, chairman of the
school committee, reported that all
teachers had been asked to devote
some time each day in teaching the
children good garden and live-at-home
practices and stressing the
importance of the program. Five
thousand copies of garden bulletin
have been turned over to the prin

go into every home. These bulle

J. L. Westmoreland, chairman of
the demonstration farms commit

township agreeing to aid any fam

a garden.
Yates Bailey stated that the 150
families working with the Farm
Security Administration were plan
ning gardens. He pointed out that
the F. S. A would assist the low
income families in providing pres

space. '
Mrs. Henry Francis reported that
the county home demonstration
club members had all agreed to
assist at least two families in their
community in providing a garden.
Mrs. Francis said she had visited
over twenty-five families during the
last ten days and assisted them in
establishing a garden. I
The ministers committee was ab
sent, but Rev. Oder F. Burnett, of
Cruso reported previous to the
meeting that all ministers had been
contacted and were stressing the
program in the worship services
each Sunday.
Mrs. S&ni Queen, chairman of the
W. P. A, N. Y. A., and 0. D C.

regarding a special section of the
local newspapers calling attention
to the garden program. He said

Hazelwood Pastors
Voice Disapproval
Of Sunday Movies
The ministers of the churches
in Hazelwood have voiced their op
position to Sunday movies through
a written request to Mrs. W. A.
Mitchell, owner of the Star Theater
that opened here on Saturday even
ing, March 22.
The request set forth that the
Hazelwood ministers believe that
the showing of secular movies on
Sunday at any time, 1. Is against
the sacred traditions of our fore
fathers who settled North Carolina
and this country; 2. Helps to lead
people without strong convictions
and innocent children to a wrong
conception of the Sabbath day; 3.
Is in direct opposition to the) teach
ing of the Bible, God's holy word;
4. Is in direct opposition to the
influence of the church which is
regarded by the great leaders of
America as the foundation and
promoter of morals and civic righ
teousness; 5. Is in the opinion of
many of the best people of Hazel
wood wrong and detrimental to our
homes and people.
The request was signed by the
Rev. J. M. Woodard, pastor of the
Hazelwood Baptist church, the Rev.
5. B. M. Ghiselin, pastor of the
Hazelwood Presbyterian church and
the Rev. R. Odell Brown, pas
tor of the Hazelwood Methodist
church.
