THE WAYNESYILLE BIOUNTAIN E ER TOURSgAECEVBl Motorists Will Pay New Federal Tax Starting Feb. 1st The new federal use tax on mo tor vehicles of $6 per year, ettec Ove February I, 1942, will be handled by collectors of internal revenue direct with vehicle owners and plans for collecting: the levy nAfltnffiraft And DOSsibly - agencies outside the government have been abandoned. According to official informa tion, collectors of internal revenue throughout the country are now preparing to compile lists of own ers of motor vehicles and will notify them that the tax is due on February 1. On that date, pay ment in the sum of $2 covering the period from February 1 to July 1, 1942, must be made. Then on July 1, $6 will be due for the full fiscal year, July 1, 1942, to July 1, 194S. Upon payment of the tax a sticker will be issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue to be attached to the motor vehicle. The sticker follows the vehicle, so when it is sold or traded, the buy er benefits and the original owner securing a new ycujuo iuu 1 cure another sticker. Penalties are I . . . . !U! 1L. I provided lor owners permitting me use of vehicles without the reve nue stickers. This new tax marks the first "federal registration fee" ever levied on motor vehicles and it is anticipated that it will raise $160,000,000 per year. But the treasury officials anticipate plenty of headaches in handling the use tax and particularly from the standpoint of enforcement. There are : gome who Can take time by the forelock and others who can't take it by the tail.
