Dr. Tom Stringfield and five of the public health nurses of the dis trict are assisting in all three of the clinics. RIBBON LANGUAGE Kansas City There's a meaning in the ribbons worn by girls at Paseo High. A yellow ribbon means "Hunting for a Boy," a blue rib bon an invitation to a kiss; ribbon on both sides of the head betoken desparation for a date. Almost every girl wears some kind of rib bon, though, because no ribbon at all means one is a confirmed "old maid." The Main Store Of E. H. Balentine & Co. is'-vii-:' - ? Phone 48 Hazelwood (Editor's Note The following was written by Staff Sergeant Kenneth Wright, Co. A, Maint. Bn. Camp Cooke, Calif., son of J. A. Wright, of Killian street, who has been in the service two years). Having had the good fortune of being born in the United States of America, there are certain things that I owe her. Namely, devotion, loyalty and the supreme sacrifice if necessary, my life. By devotion I mean that sub conscious feeling of admiration that swells up at the sound of the na tional anthem or the displaying of the national standard the stars and stripes. This urge which ex presses itself usually in rendering praise whenever, and wherever my country may become the topic of discussion. Loyalty, when demonstrated in its multiplied forms may give the agnostic room for contemptious denouncement. Yet this same toy alty is the one thing and the only thing which can hold a country united. In the true American it is not worn on a shirt sleeve for all to see, nor is it broadcast openly in loud voiced declarations or in boisterous demonstrations against various evils. These things are not necessary to loyalty merely the using of those rights given by our constitution will show our loyalty, and by the power of our vote, keep our coun try clean and above reproach. Lastly, and may there never be a cause for America to collect her just dues the supreme sacrifice, This I owe and every one within her borders owes, whether male or female, white, yellow, black, red, or brown, naturalized or otherwise. It is impossible to say when and how this debt should come due. Although we all acknowledge the debt we should have some rights in dictating the time and place of collection. ,' In defense . of our country against invasion it would be just, but in the defense of a fanciful ideal, that is proprogated by some foreign power, my country or any country has a right to ask that the sacrifice be made. This I believe is what I owe America, and there are those things that she owes me which is covered completely by quoting: "We, the people of the United States of America, in order to form a more perfect union, establish Justice, insure domestic! tran quility, provide lor the common defense, promote the general wel fare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our pos terity, do Ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.". All these things expressed in the preamble is what I have a right to expect from America, Blackie Bear By D. When he first came to the Creek just about everything he made was a mistake; but because he made a NEW mistake every time, instead of making the same old one, as Mr. Man and Uncle Joe were always doing, he soon used up all the mistakes, and he didn't make any more. That was because he worked his head well before he started his feet moving. Nowadays, Blackie sits on the big roots of his house, and smokes and smokes, and thinks and thinks, and looks like he is just plain loafing, but he isn't before he starts to do a big job The very best part of his work is done that way, for it is then that he builds up all his plans for keeping his smokehouse filled. He has learned that he has to THINK out his plans before he can WORK them out. And he didn't make any mis take when he took that long sleep, and told all the others to do the same thing. You can't half do things when you are sleepy, and you certainly can't sleep on your job, and WHOLE do it. Trying to do that is just what kept Mr. Man so poor, and Blackie is try ing to wake him up. . It was Monday morning, as you know, and Jocko and all the other boys had finished their long nap, and had come over to see what Blackie's plans for the week were. Joe Reet had gone ovey, again, the plans of Mr. Man for killing hogs on Tuesday. Billie Possum was saying what he could do with a dish of spare ribs and ruta bagas, and Jocko Monkey was talk ing about the difference in the meat of a red chicken and a white one. ''But'we will have to do some tall planning and some bigger working, if we get any of those pigs in the smokehouse, for there is mighty little room," Doctor Coon said. "Pigs, indeed! There's nothing piggy about them," Jocko said. "There was only one pig there, and I carried him home, the other day. And he was every bit I could wag with. All the others are sure enough hogs, and fat hogs at that They have been rooting around in the peanut and potato patches, for weeks, and they are fat a sight. No sir, I couldn't bring one of those big hogs over here. You will have to borrow Hee-Haw and the wagon." "Don't worry about the size of the hogs or the plans for moving them," Blackie said. "I think I saw a plan today, that is strong enough to move the largest hog Mr. Man has. I am not exactly sure, just this minute, how it will be done, but since it HAS to be done, I expect to smoke some moving plans out of my old pipe, before supper time. It never in the world would do to let all that good pork, and all ' those big pumpkins, get nearer to town than Cool Spring. Come on, every body, and let's fix things around in the smokehouse. And it will have to be a sure-enough smoke house, now, for we will have to smoke some of that meat so it will keep a long time. Let's have everything ready for company, for I would hate to have some nice fat hogs and chickens drive up to my door, late at night, and not have any place for them to sleep. It wouldn't be a bit neighborly." "One thing at the time, and that done well," is a mighty good old saying, and Blackie has tried it out a lot of times, and has found that it works well. Right now that one thing to do was to make room in the smokehouse for a lot of winter supplies. Every body else was talking about put ting up things for winter use, and he had just as well do like other folks, only do better. After he got everything ready for them he could fix up his plans for getting them in their places. The "fillings" were being fixed up by one of his neighbors, and he knew perfectly well that his old pipe was going to tell him just how he could help that neighbor land a lot of good things on the shelves in his smokehouse.
