BALENTINE I knew when I took charge of this firm Monday morning that all twelve departments were complete, but little did I realize that there were so many different items in each department. During the past few days that we have been taking inventory, I have come to fully realize what Mr; Allen meant last week when he made a statement to The Moun taineer that "every department was complete' One has to pro over the stock carefully to fully appreciate the hundreds of nationally advertised brands which are carried by the firm. This policy will be continued and will offer the best the market affords. The store will open each morn ing at eight, and close at six dur ing the week, and remain open until nine on Saturdays. It is our intention to retain all seven clerks. They are experienc ed, and have been with the firm for years. We are also going to operate the credit department the same as the former owner. We invite you to continue to buy from the firm, and we'll make it convenient for you and your family to trade here. Although gasoline and tires are scarce, we shall maintain the de livery schedules as Mr, Allen had. We will also appreciate your coop eration in helping us carry out this schedule on time. It is our intent and purpose to operate this firm as "The Trading Center of Haywood." With our 12 complete departments, there is every reason to believe that you can get what you want right here, and at a price that is equal or better than elsewhere. With many firms, the, general practice right now is to curtail on stocks, and carry fewer items. We plan to maintain complete stocks in every department. I am now not a stranger to this community. For sixteen years I have been in stores in this com munity, and I know most of you. This is a friendly trading center. Come in often. You'll always save time and money by trading here. r sorry next fall when the out-? break of pox hits the flock during the high priced egg season. As other reminders, he says: "Dispose of or pen the males sep arately if hatching has been dis continued. Infertile ggs will not spoil nearly so ranidly in hot weather as fertile eggs. Keep the eggs cool, preferably in a base ment or cellar. Be sure to plant an ample supply of grazing crops for the pullets, . Soybeans make a good summer grazing crop. Red Cross Courses In First Aid To Be Organized A class in first aid is being form ed, according to Jack Messer, who is urging that all those who wish to take work enroll at once. There are a number of persons Ranue the turkey poults on fresh land away from chickens." in the . community who are qual ified to teach the course author ized by the National Red Cross, having completed the work under James Hall, of national headquar ters. Mr, Messer states that anyone wishing to take the course is asked to get in touch with him or with Rev. H. G. Hanrmett, presi dent of the Haywood chapter. If political machines could be converted to war use the country would have something. E. H. BALENTINE AYRES IN ARMY NOW Fort' Lewis, Wash. Lew Ar res, movie actor, has been admit ted into the army after spending two months in a conscientious objectors' camp in Oregon. He hopes to be transferred to the medical corps for non-combat activity. Poultry man Offers Reminders For June Pilots sometimes refer to their bombs as "eggs" which they drop on enemy fortifications and mili tary centers. C. F. Parrish, exten sion poul.tryman, points out that the barnyard variety of eggs are potential bombs, and rivets, and guns and tanks and planes. "Poultry products are among the essential foods for both fight ing men and working men," the State College man declared, "That's why chickens need extra special treatment during this first year of America's battle for survival." Parrish says June is a critical month for the poultry flock, and he offers reminders of important hen-house jobs to be done this month. Control of lice and mites, and vaccination for fowl pox head the list of June Poultry Sugges tions. "Hot weather results in a rapid increase in lice and mites," the extension specialist stated. "It pays to start early to eliminate lice and mites and prevent re-infestation. For the lice, use nico tine sulphate or a roost paint containing this chemical. Sodium floride also may be used as a lice treatment very successfully. To eliminate and prevent re-infest-tation of red mites, paint or spray the roost poles and roost pole sup ports at. least once a month dur ing hot weather with used motor oil and kerosene, mixed half and half." Parrish says that it is better to Vaccinate for pox when the pullets are 10 to 14 weeks old than to be BALENTINE'S DEPARTMENT NO. 6 IS T4T FOR THE Home-Farm BALENTINE'S DEPARTMENTS 10 & 11 ARE FEEDS & FERTILIZERS 4m 'ifm "8, - aMsWM I "When it conies to feed prices i ouy at isaieniine s Seeond Farmer "I do too, and it is a good place to get fertilizers and seeds.
