Chatuge and Apalachia dams lo
cated on the Hiwassee River in
North Carolina as part of an emer
gency program to fill an urgent
need for defense power.
Chatuge dam is an earth struc
ture above Hiwassee dam.
Apalachia dam is 10 miles below
Hiwassee dam. Water will be re
leased through a tunnel 43,000 feet
long which, with the dam, will de
velop an effective head of about
385 feet.
In August, 1941, a new kind of
relationship between public and
private enterprise was entered in
to by TVA and the Aluminum
Company of America. Under the
agreement, TVA acquired the Fon
tana dam site, on the Little Ten
nessee River in North Carolina,
and upon completion of the Fontana
dam TVA will direct and control
the five-dam hydroelectric system
of the Aluminum Company and
will integrate it with the Authori-

Effective July 1, the present blanket insur
ance provided by the government for war
damage will be eliminated.

Two Waynesville Girls Got Diplomas
From Woman's College of UNG Jlonday
Two Waynesvile girls were
among the 431 students that grad
uated from the Woman's College of
the University of North Carolina
at the BOth anniversary commence
ment exercises held Monday morn
ing. .
They were Miss Elizabeth Ann
Glavich arid Miss Doris Emily
Whitesides.
Miss Glavich, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Glavich, receiv
ed a Bachelor of Arts degree iri
biology as preparation for a ca
reer as laboratory technician. She
attended Lenoir Rhyne college for
two years before transferring to
Woman s college, where she . was a
member of education club, square
dance club, medical technologists,
and Dikean society.
Miss Whitesides, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Whitesides, re
ceived a Bachelor of Science in
home economics. She was a mem
ber of Aletheian society, choir,
education club, home economics
club, and speakers club.

Glenville, on the Tuckasegee River.
Construction of Fontana dam
was authorized by Congress in De
cember, 1941. Fontana will be
450 feet high, the highest dam east
of the Rocky Mountains.
The extreme southwest portion
of North Carolina is served DV
TVA power, Murphy and vicinity
by a municipal distributed system
and the towns of Brasstown,
Hayesville, Shooting Creek, and
Wayne by the Blue Ridge Electric
Association, with headquarters in
Young Harris, Georgia.
TVA's phosphatic fertilizers are
being tested and demonstrated in
North Carolina by 4,046 farmers
in co-operation with the State Ag
ricultural Extension service. To
gether with, unit farm demonstra
tions, 38 area demonstrations are
being conducted to determine the
result of scientific farming and
erosion control on an entire com
munity. The work is carried on in
63 counties, 15 of which are locat
ed within the Tennessee Valley.
The Valley counties are: Avery,
Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Gra
ham, Haywood, Henderson, Jack
son, Macon, Madison, Mitchell,
Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, and
Yancey. TVA has supplied 13,258
tons of triple superphosphate and
3,083 tons of metaphos, a material
containing 62 per cent available
plant food, to the demonstration
farmer. :
TVA has completed soil surveys
in ten counties, mapping 3,949
square miles.

The V- S. Forest service and
TVA have virtualy completed a
dam on Persimmon Creek which
will form a 70-acre constant-level
pool that can be used for fish
rearing and as a base for recrea
tion. More than 9,000 TVA employees
are located in North Carolina on
the Hiwassee projects. Most of
them were recruited from the area
immediately adjacent to the con
struction projects.
TVA has given planning assis
tance to several towns affected by
its reservoirs, among them Mur
phy, where considerable readjust
ments were required.
The recreational . development
of the sh6res of Hiwassee Lake is
now under the jurisdiction of the.
U. S.' Forest service, and title to
the shoreland has been transferred
to that .agency, except for prop
erties in the vicinity of Hiwassee
dam and Murphy.

summer school at Brevard College,
and will graduate at the end of the
summer session on September 16.
