I Page 14 THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER -THURSDAY, JUXe Hi 'I The Task Committed to the Disciples HIGHLIGHTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON By NEWMAN 'CAMPBELL (The International Uniform Lesson on the above topic for June 21 U Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:14-20; Luke 24:49-53. the Golden Text being Mark 16:19, "Go ye Into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation.") ACCORDING to St. Mark's ac count of the resurrection of Jesus, He first appeared to Mary Magda lene, then to the two we heard of last week, who walked with Him on the road to Emmaus. All these told the others of the Risen Lord, but they would not believe. The Lord was on earth for 40 days before His ascension. Later He appeared to the 11 as they sat at meat (this was still on Easter Day), and upbraided them for their unbelief and hard ness of heart, "because they be lieved not them which had seen Him after He was risen." St. Matthew tells us next that the 11 apostles went to a moun tain in Galilee where Jesus had "appointed them.' We do not know when He gave His command, but He met them there, and "when they saw Him, they wor shipped Him: but some doubted." Jesus said to them on this oc casion, "All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth." "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: "X Am With You Alway" "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever, I have com manded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." St. Luke's account of the same happening tells us that Jesus at this time told His apostles to tarry In the city of Jerusalem until "ye be endued with power from on r high," In Other words, until the Holy Ghost came upon them. ; And St. . Luke says, "He led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up HU hands, and blessed them." "And It came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into Heaven. "And they worshiped Him; and returned to Jerusalem with great Joy: "And were continually In the temple, praising and blessing' God." Matthew, you see, says nothing of the ascension. St. Mark's account of the talk with the apostles and subsequent ascension is different from that of the other two, as he tells first of Jesus' upbraiding of the 11 'as they sat at table, and then telling them to go "Into the world, anJ preach the gospel to every crea ture." "He that believeth and is bap tlzed shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues ; They shall take up serpents; and If they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay their hands on the sick, and they shall recover." After He had so spoken, says St. Mark, "He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. "And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirm ing the word with signs follow ing." Thus the first Christian mis sionaries were sent out to preach the gospel "to all men" not to the Jews alone, not to the Gentiles only but to ALL. Most mission aries no longer have the power that Mark tells Us Jesus bestowed on His apostles, but they go as earnestly as ever did these first preachers to bring the gospel to the people who live in the farth est corners of the earth. And they believe and trust that today, as In those early times when "Jesus left them and ascended into heav en, that their Lord la with them always. Go easy on the make-up girls, and do not be a "gold digger" if you want to get your man. That is the advise of Dr. Clif ford R. Adams, assistant profes sor of psychology at Pennsylva nia State college on the basis of results of a test completed among J men from five-universities. The men students revealed they wanted their girl friends to be de pendable and modest as well as to be easy on the pocketbook and sparing with the rouge and lip stick, Dr. Adams reported, A "vast majority" of the 256 men given the test marked "true" after the saying, "Men date the popular girl but marry the" depen dable one." While the male Students expres sed their belief that no one should marry before the age of 25, the women held out for earlier wed ding bells. The co-eds thought "unintelligent people" should not marry but the men were not so discriminating.
