P. Grasty, at Mag gie. Corporal Grasty is in the quartermasters division, and likes his work so much, that he plans to remain in the army even after the war. He entered the service in January and has been at Camp Lee ever since entering. Corp. Wayne McCracken Arrives Safely Mr. and Mrs. G. H. McCracken have been notified that their son, Corporal Wayne McCracken, of the 340 Bomb Squadron of the American -Air Force has arrived safely, his destination unknown. Corporal McCracken has been in the service for the past 18 months. He volunteered nd was first sent to McDill Field in Tampa, Fla., then to a flying school at La Guardia, N. Y., and then to Sarasota. So. 1194-June 18-25-July 2-9 Taking the initial steps toward winning their wings as pilots and commissions as second lieutenants in the U. S. Army Air Forces, Thomas Earl "Bud" Blalock, son nf' of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Bla- iock, oi nazeiwoou, ana anuria Vance Sizemore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Onville Sylvester Sizemore, of Route 2, Waynesville, are now enrolled in the Army Air Forces Pre-Flight school (pilot) at Max well Field, Ala. where they will undergo expert military physical and academic training calculated to fit them for the job of learning to fly America's fighter planes. There are eighty one young cadets from North Carolina now taking their pre-flight course at this field. Cadet Blalock is a graduate of Waynesville township high school and he attended Blanton's Business College at Asheville. He was ac cepted as a cadet in the U. S. Army Air Forces on May 9, 1942, at Fort Jackson. Cadet Sizemore attended Clyde high school and' was employed as a skilled electric welder when ac cepted as a cadet May 7, 1942, at Maxwell Field, Ala. After completing their course at Maxwell Field these cadets will be sent to on6 of the many primary flying schools located in the South east for the first phase of their pilot training. . Sergeant C. W. Kronenburg, of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end m town with friends. Corporal Harold Tingen, of Fort Jackson, visited friends here over the week-end. ' No. 1200 June 25-July 2-9-18 - Four brotners, sons of Mrs. El len Rogers and the late James Mitchell Rogers, of the Bethel sec tion, are now serving with the Armed Forces, in various divisions. At the top, left, is Pvt. Collie Rogers, age 37, who enlisted in the army in February, 1942. He is in the Field Artillery (F. A.) station ed at , Camp Forrest, , Tenn. He visifed "his' mother in Canton recently. Private Charlie R. Rogers, top right, is 27 years of age, .and is with the Q. M. Regiment in Aus tralia. He entered- the service in 1941. Lower left is Private George Rogers, age 25. who is with the engineering division at Camp Polk, La. He enlisted last November. At right is the youngest son, Pfc. Woodrow W. Two Haywood Boys Transferred to Maine Private Claud E. Sutton and Private Dennis Winkler, both of this county, are now stationed at Dow Field, in Rangor, Maine. Both volunteered on Jan. 2, of this year. They took their basic train ing at Sheppard Field, Wichita, Texas. They are both serving as plane mechanics. They are enthu siastic about their work. is now a corporal and serving as a supply clerk at Moore Field, Ad vanced Flying school, Mission, Texas. Pvt. Fred Crawford Cables Mother Mrs. W. T. Prior to the. entry of this coun try in the war Mr. Ditmore was a pursur on a passenger seeani ship. Later his ship was taken over by the navy and Mr. Ditmore remained with it in a civilian ca pacity. Two weeks ago a cable was received stating that Mr. Dit more had arrived safely- in Iceland. Mr. Ditmore traveled for a number of years in Western North Carolina for the Wilson Packing Company and for two years was Two boys from Allen's Creek, have arrived safely in New Cale donia, it was learned this week. Corporal Nathan Norman and Private Arnold Warlick. Both volunteered in the army in July, 1940. Corporal Norman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Norman. Private Huston Jackson, now stationed at Camp Blanding, Fla., spent a few days with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jackson, on Al len's Creek. Sergeant Guy Arrington of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end here with relatives. Sereeant Mackie Robinson, of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end here with Mrs. Robinson. June25 Sergeant George Moody Visits Family Here Sergeant George Moody spent the week-end here with his fam ly. Sergeant Moody re-entered the service in December, 1941. Prior to that time he had been in the U. S. Army for 12 years. Lt. Col. Harry Crawford Stationed In Ireland A letter from Lt. Col. Harry Crawford, to his mother here stat ed that he was temporarily station ed in North Ireland, the letter having been written a month ago. He stated that the. weather was pretty chilly, but that after he had spent eight winters in the state of Iowa he could "take the Ireland climate." Sergeant James Robinson, of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end here with his family. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Coalson have received word from their son Dee- Dee Coalson, that he has arrived safey in Ireland. Mr. Coalson, who went in to the service several months ago, received his training with the Armored Regiment at Camp Wheeler, Ga., Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Fort Dix. New Jersey. Lieutenant James Davis, of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end here with his family. Private Robert Cope, Jr., Of Fort Jackson, is spending a furlough here with relatives. Captain George F. Plott is now stationed in Spnngfheld, III. Mrs, Plott recently returned home after spending three weeks with him, He likes the present location fine, but is finding it "warmer than Western North Carolina," he said. Captain George C, Plott, who left here in September, 1940, with Company H for Fort Jackson, is now stationed with Company D, 353rd Infantry, 89th Division, at Camp Carson, Colorado. Captain Plott says he is enjoying the west, and that the country was beauti f ul. but he still looked forward for each issue of The Mountaineer for news from home. PFC BUI Toohey, now with the marine corps, in Key West, Fla., has gotten just a little homesick since reading the line-up of the Softball teams in The Mountain eer.
