Totals . . 41 The Tannery and Dayton Rubber softball teams shared top honors in the league, with each team hav- ng suffered defeat only once in nine games. The peppy high school team re mained on the third rung of the won and lost ladder, while the Lions occupied the half way mark after winning and dropping game this week. Honors for winning the most games of the past week, went to the high school sluggers, as they added two games to their win column. Pet Dairy played three games, and won one. Dayton Rubber took the only game they played, as did the Tannery. Rotary ended with the same per centage, after taking a game from Jonathan Creek, only to drop one by a run to Pet Dairy. Jonathan Creek dropped both games of the week. One to Rotary and the other to the Lions by a 13 to 9 score. The Booster dropped their only game of the week to high school. HARLEY SMITH Funeral services were held Wed nesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Crabtree Methodist church for Mrs. Harley Smith, 53, who died at her home in the Fines Creek section at 2:37 o'clock Tues day morning. The Rev. Forest Ferguson of ficiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, two sons, Woodrow and Howard Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Rathbone, and Mrs. Nellie Brown; four brothers, John, Sherman, Erve Haney, all of Hay wood county and Melvin Haney, of Greer, S. C; two sisters, Mrs. Dell Haney, of Clyde, and Mrs. Docky Green, of New Jersey. mrs. margaret Mcelroy Relatives in the county have been notified of the death of Mrs. Margaret McElroy, 80, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs, Chas. Cox, In Groverton, Texas, on Sunday, June 14th, at 10:40 p. m Mrs. McElroy was a native of Haywood county and had resided in and around Waynesville all her life until the past four years since she has been with her daughter in Texas.'- Funeral services were held on the following Monday at 2:30 p. m. at the Old Sumpter cemetery, in Groverton, with the Rev. Zim merman, assisted by Rev. Frank Piatt, Officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: E. E. Cox, Buford Creacy, Lloyd James, Curtis Hill, William Park er, and Robert Mills. Mrs. McElroy . was a devout member of the Baptist church and was beloved by a large circle of relatives and friends. I Surviving are: her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Cox, ef Groverton; two sons, Sam McElroy, of Lake Juna luska, and Paul McElroy, of the U. S. navy, stationed in Norfolk; eight grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. The North Carolina Confeder ate Memorial forest in the Pisgah National Forest will be dedicated on Sunday, with Josephus Daniels, editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, as the chief speaker. The forest will contain 125,000 red spruce and balsam trees as living memorials to the 125,000 soldiers North Carolina furnished for Confederacy during the War Between the States. Because of rubber and gasoline restrictions most of the dedicatory program will be held during lunch eon at the George Vanderbilt hotel at AsheviIIe at 12:30. Afterwards a brief exercise for the unveiling of the temporary marker at the memorial forest near the Devil's Court House along the Blue Ridge farkway will be held. Mrs. R. O. Everett, of Durham, division president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. which is sponsoring the project, will make the address of presen tation of the area into the cus tody of the National Forest Ser vice and H. B. Bosworth, supervisor of Pigah National Forest, will ac cept it for the government. Mrs. L. E. Fisher, of AsheviIIe, is general chairman of the com mittee in charge of the dedication program, as it was during her term of office as state president that the movement was started.
