Eight Graduate
At St. John's;
Mahoney Heard
Former Pastor Here Tells
Graduates To Honor, Serve
and Glorify God.
"You can gain no sounder wis
dom than to realize that you have
not learned everything and that the
crowning success of the hard earn
ed knowledge you now possess will
be in your ability to use it, to
honor your country, to serve your
fellow man, and to glorify your
God", declared Reverend Vincent
J. Mahoney, pastor of St. John's
church in Tryon, to the graduates
of St. John's high school last night
Discussing the reason for living
the speaker emphasized the great
truth that men and women are
here for the improvement of world
conditions, to get the best out of
life, to make the world a better
and more comfortable .place in
which to live.
The speaker declared that the
condition of the world today is the
direct fruit of a brand of educa
tion handed down through the past
one hundred years, which makes

Are Announced This Week

The speakers were introduced by
R v. Francis J. Murphy, assistant
pastor of St. John's church. Invo
cation was by Rev. Hugh P. Ken
nedy, assistant pastor of St. John's
church. Rev. Ambrose F. Rohr
bacher, superintendent of St. John's
school, presented the graduates.
Heiu'diction was pronounced by the
Very Reverend Louis J. Hour, V.F.,
pastor of St. Lawrence church of
Asheville. Recessional and band
selections were undtr the direction
of Charles Isley.
Faculty memchrs wore caps and
gowns and carried academic hoods
of different colors, designating
their degrees. The high school
graduates wore caps and gowns
of royal blue.
High school graduates included
Kathleen Rllison, Doris Ann Greer,
Wingate (Toots) Hannah, Lois
Jean Ingle, Gladys Kenney, Wil
liam Ray, Spaldon Underwood and
Elizabeth Wasilik.
Grammar school graduates were
Rarbara Ann Boyd, Grace Furtado,
Teddy Hundley, Marilyn McMillan
and Dries Vandeiiburg.
The baccalaureate sermon was
preach Sunday, June 4, at eleven
o'clock a. m., by Rev. Thos. F.
Roche, assistant pastor Immaculate
Conception church of Henderson-

The wedding plans of Miss Vir
ginia Kellett, daughter of Mrs. J.
M. Kellett, whose marriage to
George Richard Patterson, of
Hickory and Baltimore, will take
place on Sunday afternoon at 4:30
o'clock at the First Methodist
church have been announced this
week.
The bride and bridegroom will
arrive in town on Friday, with
other members of their families
and friends. A number of social
affairs had been planned by
friends, but due to the short time
the couple will be here all the
courtesies could not be extended.
Miss Kellett will have as her
matron of honor, Mrs. Herbert
Lee Buchanan, and bridesmaids
will be as follows: Miss Martha
Mae Wyche, of Waynesville, Miss
Emme Lee Rhyne, of Clemson Col
lege, Miss Martha Hines, of Hick
ory, a classmate at Lenoir-Rhyne,
and Miss Mary Ellen Abercrombie,
a cousin, of Fountain Inn.
The bridegroom will have as his
best man, his brother, Bill Patter
son, U. S. Navy, and ushers will
be: Connelly Gamble, of Montreat,
Bill Ray, Herbert Braren and Roy
Parkman, of Waynesville.
Dr. Robert L. Patterson, of
Charlotte, retired Lutheran min
ister, and grandfather of the
bridegroom, will perform the cere
mony. He will be assisted by Rev.
J. Clay Madison, pastor of the
church.
Prior to the ceremony a program
of nuptial music will be rendered
by Miss Joyce Kellett and Miss
Rebecca Kellett, both of Fountain
Inn, S. C, and cousins of the bride.
They will be accompanied by Mrs
W. L. Matney, organist, who will
also render the processional and
the recessional.
The bride will be given in mar
riage by her uncle, Rev. A. W.
Lynch, of Gastonia.
Mrs. Clyde H. Ray, Jr., will en
tertain with a tea on Friday after

State Executive Board
Of Agriculture Asso.
J. C. Brown, president of the
North Carolina Agriculture Asso
ciation spent two days in Raleigh
last week attending a meeting of
the state executive board. This
week Mr. Brown is attending a
three day cannery school at Pleas
ant Gardens, near Marion, for in
struction for community cannery
leaders. Mr. Brown is in charge
of the community cannery program
of the Waynesville school district.
The Ia.st meeting of the Hay
wood Chapter of the United Daugh
ters of the Confederacy was held
on Friday afternoon with Mrs. W.
F. Swift, with Mrs. James R. Boyd,
Jr., president, presiding.
Mrs. George I'lott had the paper
of the afternoon which was on
"Leroy P. Walker, Secretary of the
Confederate States of America."
Mrs. IMott sketched the life of
Secretary Walker and told of his
contribution to the history of the
Southern states.
The chapter voted to attend
church services as a body on D
Day. Donation were collected to
the blood plasma fund of the
chapter. Plans were made to aid
in the Fifth War Loan campaign
and all members were urged to buy
a bond during the drive.
A report of the funeral of J.
M. Wood was given by Mrs. Noble
Garrett, chairman of the (lag com
mittee, who stated that she had
sent a Confederate flag at the
time of the death of Mr. Wood,
only surviving veteran of the War
Between the States residing in
Haywood county.
Miss Jane Stentz, of Shelby,
guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs.
David Stentz, sang two numbers,
accompanied by Miss Nancy Kil
lian. A social hour followed ad
journment. Miss Susie Bell, who is a stu
dent at Salem College has arrived
to spend the next few weeks here
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
C. V. Bell, after which she will
attend the summer school at the
University of North Carolina.
