Ilands, every Sunday 11:00 Question: Does shallow cultiva tion of corn pay? Answer: "Yes, say Extension agronomists at State College. They suggest that you pick up a hand ful of soil behind your cultivator and, if the soil is full of broken roots, cultivate more shallow. The plant needs its roots for obtaining moisture and fertilizer and it can not stand up straight, if the side roots are cut. Barring off, or ridging with a turning plow, will usually destroy so many roots as to be definitely harmful. The agro nomists suggest that you do not cultivate your corn after it begins to tassel. The Golden Text will be taken from Jeremiah 10:16, "He is the former of all things and Israel is the rod of his inheritance; phy, every 5th Sunday, 8:00 ( The Lord of hosts is his name.' Question: Must one have clay soils to produce alfalfa success fully? Answer: No. Experimental tests and farm experience have shown that it can be grown in all sections of North Carolina. Seeding dates vary for the different sections and it is very important that the crop sown at the riirht time. The soil should be tested to determine its lime requirement and prepara tions should be made in advance of the seeding of the crop. State College agronomists suggest that you disk the land 4 to 6 weeks before seeding and that as much vegetation be left on the surface of the soil as possible. This helps to prevent the soil from baking and helps in getting a good stand. Answer: Broadcast about 15 pounds of Crimson Clover and 15 pounds of Italian rye grass per acre at the last cultivation of the corn, suggest the Extension spec ialists at State College.
