Pfc. Chambers, her husband, son
of Mrs. Esther Chambers, of Clyde,
recently returned from overseas
where he served in the 1 acihe war
theatre for two years and eight
months. He volunteered for ser
vice on September 16, 1939. At
the present the couple are residing
with the bridegroom's mother in
Clvde.

Robert McLean and his niece,
Miss Betty Mowdy, had as their
guests last week their cousins, Dr.
and Mrs. H. C. Hassell, of Tusca
loosa, Ala.
Miss Doris Whitesides, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Whitesides,
spent the past week-end with her
parents at their home in the Bethel
section of the county. Miss White
sides is the county home demon
stration agent of Ashe county.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howell, of
Providence, R. I., spent the week
end with the former's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. D. A. Howell.
Mrs. Oscar Coffin, of Chapel
Hill, spent a few days with Mrs.
T. Lenoir Gwyn the first of the
week. While in this area Mrs.
Coffin also visited relatives in
Pigeon section and was the guest
of Mrs. Paul Hyatt last week.
Mrs. Shuford Rathbone, who
has been a patient in the Mission
Hospital, has returned to her home
and is much improved. Her hus
band, Seaman Rathbone, has re
turned to his post at Camp Peary,
after spending several days with
his wife.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Y. Bridges,
of Charlotte, were the guests last
week of the former's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Bridges.
