jf (One Day Nearer Victory) THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 J THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER Pace 16 I -i f Rambling Around Odd Bits of This, That and the Other By W. CURTIS RUSS Charles Ray has a story about angels that made such a hit when he welcomed the REA convention here last week, that he had to re peat it again that night at the barbecue. Glenn Wyatt, stationed in an army camp in New Orleans, left a copy of The Mountaineer on his bunk one day after reading it, and shortly afterwards a soldier from Hendersonville passed by, recog nized the paper and looked up the owner. That night when he foudl Wyatt, they renewed friendships of years past, when Wyatt was a star on the Waynesville football team and played during his high school days against the Hendersonville Bearcats. Sgt. Joe Palmer, a Marine in the South Pacific, has been through several stiff battles against the Japs, and had been exceedingly for tunate to escape without a scratch until the Marines landed on the shores of Titian. Sgt. Palmer and a buddy were creeping up the beach when a Jap sniper opened fire. The bullet shattered Palmer's ammun nition container, sending a piece of the metal crashing into his right arm. His buddy looked up just in time to see the Jap grin then there was a burst of fire from the Yankee's rifle and from then on everything was silent where the grinning Jap had been sitting. From across the knoll came a rain of bullets, ami one of these caught Palmer's bu'lily in the arm. Jimmy Moore, manager of the Haywood REA, makes a good mas ter of ceremonies. He has lots of talent for remembering names, and speaks with east, although admits privately that he does not feel at home before a crowd. James G. McKinley has three ducks that are the foundation of a hotly waged contest between two membership teams of the Hazel wood Boosters Club. Mac has promised his ducks for the dinner if his side loses. This has caused some speculation, and concern among members of his team, for fear they might deliberately fall down on the job just in order to get a duck dinner. Charlie Grennell, a professional photographer of Lake Junaluska and Daytona Beach, made the best color photograph of Mrs. Roosevelt that we have seen to date. Charlie makes a specialty of scenes and flowers. His color sunset scenes surpass anything we have had come our way. Charlie gets such depth to his pictures, and the results are amazing. Rev. H. G. Hammett's leaving to take up work as postor of The Tem ple Baptist church in Durham, brought about the revival of the pulpit committee of the First Bap tist church again. There is one thing about being on the pulpit committee, you certainly have to listen to lots of extra sermons, and remember them. You see the Bap tist send out a committee to in vestigate prospects, and if the man fills the needs then he is offered the pastorate of the church' if he consents. The pulpit committee is like F.B.I. , they have to track down every tip given about a new man or prospect. So far, about 15 names have been turned in as prospects for pastor here. Not all of these will be heard, as some facts and inside facts are gotten before the committee goes out on "the hunt." The Mountaineer hag available, without charge, a blotter with the tabulation of the presidential elec torial vote from 1184 to 1940. It is interesting to note that during that time, six states have gone Democratic every time, they are: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Lou isiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. (North Carolina has gone Democratic every time ex cept in 1928, she went into the Re publican column.) Vermont is the only state with a perfect Republi can score. In 1920, 1924 and 1928 the score was almost 100 per cent Republican, and in 1932, 1936 and 1940 just the opposite. One of these are yours for the asking. State College Hints By Rath Current, State Home Demonstration Agent N. C. State College. Sewing needles will not rust if they are stored in a well-corked glass bottle or jar to which a drop of machine oil may be placed from time to time. A nut pick can be a handy piece of sewing equipment. The blunt end can be used as an aid in turn ing belts, while the pick end can be used to pull out the cornt rs after the belt is turned. It is al.o handy for pulling out basting threads. A scrapbag made of mosquito netting, or any other open-mesh fabric, makes it possible to find the particular piece of material one may be looking for without empty ing the entire contents of the bag. Those perfectly good preserves or jellies which somehow do accu mulate in the cupboard are splen did to use in gingerbread and spice cake. Spices should be kept away from the kitchen stove and in closed cans to best retain their spiciness. To insure straight edges on scrim curtains, fold each curtain down the center and baste the edges to gether before washing. Remove the basting after the curtains are ironed. They have been visiting in New York, and other eastern points since leaving Canton, where Mr. Baker served as supply pastor of the First Baptist church there for several months. TIMELY Farm Questions and Answers Question: How can I supply wood for war needs and maintain enough growing timber for after the war? Answer: Extension foresters of State College suggest that the first step is to cut out worthless and low-quality trees in the average farm woods. Second, cut only the larger trees because logging and milling costs will be lower. Then, take advantage of the pulpwood market by converting tree tops and whole trees, that will not make sawlogs, into pulpwood. The most convenient way to apply the fireproofing solution is to use it instead of plain water when you sprinkle clothes for iron ing. Also, be sure your iron is moderately hot. If the fabric is damp or the iron too hot, you will find the mixture depositing on the iron rather than saturating the material. hardwood, selective logging yields the greatest dividends. Question : Can you give me a simple solution for fireproofing fabrics in the home? Answer: Use 7 ounces of borax Question: Why are so many farmers getting interested in the growing of alfalfa? Answer: One of the reasons, say State College Extension specialists, is that it provides four cuttings of hay per year and the average yield per acre for North Carolina is al most two tons, far ahead of other average hay yields. Many grow ers have cut more than two tons of lespedeza hay per acre this year while some growers have cut four tons of alfalfa. It has also been discovered that about 30 pounds of borax per acre will con trol alfalfa "yellows" and greatly increase yields, when applied with other fertilizer. The borax lasts for several years. Alfalfa also gives a good hay crop early in the spring when it is often sorely need ed.
