The program was under the direction of Francis V. Smith, assistant Scout executive of the Daniel Boone council, opened with the in vocation by Rev. R. T. Houts, pas tor of the Bethel Methodist church. The presentation was made by W. S. Edwards of Canton, Assis tant District Scout Commissioner, who presented the charter to last for the ensuing year to Mrs. Paul Hyatt, president of the Bethel Parent Teacher Association, spon soring group of the troop. Mrs. Hyatt accepted the charter and spoke brifly of the fine work being done by the troop. In clos ing she introduced the following members oi the troop committee: Hugh Terrell, chairman, W. P Whitesides, C- E. Mainous, W. P, Mehaffey and J. A. Inman. The Scout Master, Rev. R. T. Houts, and the assistant scout master, Guy Wells. A candle in vestiture ceremony was then con ducted by Scout Executive Fran cis V. Smith. Membership cards were present ed to the following boys of the Bethel Troop; William P. White sides, Jr., James Davis Whitesides, Clifford T. West, Charles David Peeke, William Eugene Mainous, Joe Jack Wells, Hoyt Powell, Chas. R. Ledbetter, Phillip L. Sherrill, Homer G. Galloway, Jr., Jack J. Robinson, OrvilK Powell and T. M. Gibson. Following the meeting the Pigeon River District Committee (Hay wood county group) held a meet ing and discussed the plans for the further features of the work. Garrett Is Promoted To Corporal Wayne C. Garrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Garrett of Waynesville, has recently been promoted to the grade of corporal. Cpl. Garrett is serving as a driver for a 7th AAF headquarters in the Central Pacific area. Cpl. Ga rrett has been overseas since April, 1943 and has been awarded the good conduct medal and the driver's medal. He is a graduate of the Waynesville Town ship high school, and has two brothers in the service, Robert Garrett, who is serving in the field artillery and James Garrett who is in the Infantry. Accepts Award Riley Jack Clark Returns To Post After Leave Riley Jack Clark, seaman first class, has returned to Brooklyn Naval Yard, after a two weeks leave spent with his family here and in Canton. Milner of Waynesville, has recently been graduated from the Fifty Third Reserve Officers' Class at the Ma rine Corps schools in Quantico, Va. Lt. Milner is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he majored in English. He received his bachelor of arts de cree February 26, 1944. He is a member of the Block "C" Club. Tenney Gives Program For This Week The recreational program of the Community Council has another full week's schedule in operation, it was learned from E. W. Tenney, director. The schedule which calls for various forms of recreational acti vities for the period began on MondaV and will last through the wet-k includes the following: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1 the director spends from 2:00 to 1 2:30 o'clock at the Hazelwood grammar school, where relay races and tug of war programs are be ing practiced; on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 to 12:00 Mr. Tenney directs recreational acti vities at the Central Elementary school. j On Tuesday and Thursday from 1 1:45 to 2:80 o'clock he instructs groups at the East Waynesville I school. He is in charge of activi ties at the township high school every day from 2:30 to 4:00 o'clock. From 12:00 to 12:30 he is in charge of the Wellco Shoe Corporation group basketball daily practice. On Monday, Wednesday and Fri day from 3 to 4 o'clock the boys from St. John's school practice basketball at the Armory; On Tuesday and Thursday the girls of St. John's practice basketball from 3 to 4 o'clock. On Monday and Thursday after noons the local Senior Service Girl Scout troop hold their recreational program practice; on Monday eve ning at 7:00 o'clock the men from the Dayton Rubber plant practice basketball. On Tuesday evenings the Way ni'sville Girl Scout troop meets at 4 o'clock and after their meeting have a recreational program and setting up exercises; Tuesday aft ernoon at 5:45 the Dayton Rubber plant girls practice basketball; on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock the Senior Service Girl Scouts hold their regular meeting and setting up exercises. On Wednesday afternoon the Business and Professional Wo men's Group meet at 4 o'clock; On Wednesday evening, at 7:00 the Cut Sole department of the A. C.
