Dietz Serves In Heavy Mortar Barrage Lt. Alvin P. Deitz, son of Mr and Mrs. M. L. Deitz of Waynes ville, won a high spot in an article in TTF, servicemen's paper printed for the Infantry combat teams in France, in an issue dated Oct. 4 In a heavy mortar barrage the Americans blasted the German forces until they were completely annihilated when the three hour deadly attack was over. I.t Deitz led a 30 Cal. machine gun platoon who were situated on a hill overlooking the town direct ing a sharp blazing curtain of fire The Germans evidently hadn't counted on this effective support of the riflemen. This was the same mortar machine gun crew who had helped the doughboys take the town. And once again thev came through for their fellow soldiers At the battle's end, any acts of heroism were related. One story is told how Deitz and Pvt. Irving Jacobs of Chicago, had gone for ward, previous to this counter at tark and amidst enemy shellfire, i laid telephone wires from their ob servation post to the rifle company. It was also Deitz and Jacobs, ac cording to the TTF report, who crawled forward with SSgt. Ver- ner Nellsch of Havan, Kan. through enemy shellfire to bring C. Rations to the men in their foxholes. Lt. Deitz left here with the Na tional Guard in 1940 and attended Officers Training school at Fort Bennmg. He has been overseas since July.
