Knoxville, Schaad, SNAP HOTS By Frances Gilbert Fraiier Staff Writer A holly wreath upon the door, A tinseled branch on lighted tree; Ribbons and tissue on the floor It's Christmas time again, you see. And time again, I'm glad to say, To send to you a card of cheer. And Wish you Merry Christmas Day That keeps right on throughout the year. Another year and again we greet the Christmas holidays with all the attendant festivities and merry making that the present conditions will allow. Naturally, we are still ed in our joyful celebrations due to the sorrow, suffering and selfish ness in the world today. We cannot let our spirits rise to the great heights of olden days when every thing was normal and the families intact. But, somehow, we cannot quite agree with a , lady whom we listened to as she described her feelings about how the holidays should be spent. She did not stress the fact of church-going nor that we . should dedicate our minds, hearts and savings to a special cause. Her whole theory seemed to be that we shouldn't allow any pleasure, happiness or gaiety be included in the scheme of things. She said we should remember how men were dying, people were starv ing and all the agonies of warfare that were besetting the earth at this time. In other words, her idea was that by our weeping, we would aid those who were in trouble. She said that she had erased every "Merry" and "Happy" on her Christmas cards. And that she didn't believe any one on earth was happy. That seems to be the wrong atti tude to take at this time when both the men overseas and those here at home are striving with all their might to bolster up the morale of both sides of the oceans. It has never seemed to help matters on a rainy day to holf an umbrella on one's shoulder and not open it for protection. And there never was a truer song title than, "Let a Smile be your Umbrella." Smiles are often made to keep the tears from choking in one's throat and a pleas ant and cheerful word here at home won't push a man deeper In a fox hole a thousand miles away. But it most assuredly will boost up the courage of us who are waiting for that Great Day when we will raise our voices in Thanksgiving for the Peace that has come. Christmas really should be given over to the children and young folk, and how can we expect them to understand the seriousness of life as it is in this tragic era. They will find enough serious events standing in their onward journey through life and it seems hardly Campbell, Leahy (4). Girls' lineup: St. John's (20) Knoxville (16) F Greer (1) Calhoun (2) F A.
