The Indians will play a return game at the Armory on December 29. On Wednesday, December 13, the Bethel boys defeated St. John's 26-17, the Bethel girls won over St. John's girls 64 to 10. Last Monday night, December 18, the Rangers outranged Spring dale 65 to 22 and the Rangerettes, in a preliminary game, bowed to the Dayton Rubber girls 29 to 30. Army, entered the service on April fi, l'Jll and was inducted at Camp Croft, from the latter he was sent to Fort Bragg and from there to Camp Wheeler, Ga., then to tamp Pickett, Va., and from there to Fort George Meade, Md., and overseas, where he is now serving in France. Before entering the service he was employed by the Smoky Mountains Trailways. Hia wife and four children are residing in Yadkinville. V. Lester Poteate, M.M. 2C, is now in North Africa. He enter ed the service on April 5, 1944, and was inducted at Richmond, Va., from there he was sent to Camp Peary, Va., and later to the Norfolk Naval Training base. At the time he entered the service he was em ployed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. His wife and three children ure making their home in Newport News while he is in the Navy. Pvt. Free, Winner Of Purple Heart, Back In States Private Herman Free, son of John Free of Waynesville, who has served over seas nearly six months, has returned to the States. He was wounded in action in France in August of last summer and has since been awarded th- Purple Heart. At present Pvt. Free is a patient in a hospital in New York. He entered the service on Nov. 24. 1943 as a volunteer and took his basic training at Camp Croft. From Croft he was sent to Fort George Meade, Md., and fmm there to New York and ov.rseas. His wife and two children have been residing in Bessemer City while Pvt. Free has been in th. service, As soon as he is (liscnarg ed from the army they plan to return here to make their homi. Mrs. Free is the former Miss Evelyn Griffin, of Waynesville. Overseas First Methodist Church To Be Open Christmas and New Year The First Methodist Church will be open and h'ated on Christmas and New Year's Day, it has been announced by the pastor, Rev. J. Clay Madison. The church is being opened on these two days for prayer and meditation. Not only the members, but visitors are cordially invited to drop in during the two days. Sympathy is what one girl of fers another in exchange for details. Nancy Alice Justice Is Wedded To Charles Lyda On 19th Mrs. W. P. Farmer has announc ed the mar riage of her granddaugh ter, Miss Nancy Alice Justice of Waynesville, to Charles Lyda of Oteen. The certmony took place at the parsonage of the Oteen Bap tist Church at X o'clock,' Tuesday, December 19, with the pastor offi ciating. Only a few close friends attend ul the marriage. After a short wedding trip in this section the couple will return to Oteen where they will reside. Pfc. James R Wright Serving In Italy Private First Class James R. Wright, of Killian Street, is serv ing with the 135th Infantry Regi ment, which recently marked its 338th day in combat. The regi ment, a unit of the 34th "Red Bull' Division with Lt. General Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army in Italy, has been in foreign service continu ously for more than two and one half years, according to informa tion received from headquarters in Italy. Algiers, Hill 609, the Volturno and Rapido Rivers, Cassino, the Anzio beachhead, Rome, Pisa and the Gothic Line have been fought for and won by the men of the 34th in their nearly 1,000 days overseas. One battalion of the 135th took part in the invasion of northern Algeria in November, 1942. They pushed overland into Tunisia. There the 135th won a division citation for its part in the bloody fight for Hill 609. The regiment landed in Italy in September, 1943, and went into the line the following month to push bridgeheads across the CPL. ROBERT M. BUCHANAN has returned to Long Island, N- Y. after spending a 15-day furlough with his wife and parents here. He returned from 22-months overseas th,. first of November. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Buchanan. Volturno River. The 135th has lost 1,000 killed and several thousands wounded. N-arly a division of replacements has passed through the ranks of the 135th.
