Canton Increases Personnel Of City Police Department Klmo Inman, a former member of the police department of Can ton was sworn in as a patrolman Saturday, according to an an nouncement by Mayor Sam M. Rob inson, chairman of the police de partment. The department is to be in creased from seven to nine mem bers, it was learned from Mayor Robinson, with the ninth member yet to be announced. W. N. Stroup is chief of police and other members in addition to the latest appointment include: John B. Woodard, Fred M. Smith. Harold Moffitt, Kdward U. Wilson. John Dills, and J. K. Pickens. Charlie Weaver, of Vc(. Administration, Here 1st and 3rd Fridays Charles Weaver, of the Veter an's Administration, has changed the days on which he will visit the Haywood Red Cross chapter, it was learned this week from Mrs. Barbara Haviland Seaman, secretary. Mr. Weaver will visit the local office on the first and third Fri days of each month. All veterans and their families who wish to discuss any problem are urged to visit the office on these days. Lt. Sameul A. Carswell Discharged From Army First Lt. Samuel A. Carswell, son of Mrs. John Carswell and the late Mr. Carswell, of Waynesville, has received his discharge from the army at Camp Robinson, Ark. Lt. Carswell left here with the local Company H in the National Guard unit and served 27 months s In the Caribbean theator. At the time he entered the service he was employed by the A. C. Lawrence Leather Company. Lt. Carswell and Mrs. Carswell. the latter before her marriage, Miss Fannie Hosafloolk, arrived durine the week from Camp Robin son, Little Rock, Ark , where he has been stationed for the past sev eral months. Placed in class 2-A were: Philip Burns York, Jr., Jack Sharp, Jack Thomas Queen, and Dock Ted Whitted, Jr. Placed in class 4-F was Dock Jones. Sgt. Paul J. Willis Awarded Bronze Star TSgt. Paul J. Willis, of Canton R.F.D. No. 1, who has been serv ing with the 83rd "Thunderbolt" division in Germany, has beer, awarded the bronze star medal for meritorious service. Sgt. Willis is the son of Mrs. Ruth C. Willis, of Canton, R E D No. 1, and has two brothers in the service, Sgt. Hcrschel Willis who is now in France and Sgt Troy Williams, who has returned alter several months in France and England. The citation read in part: "For distinguishing himself by meritorious service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from July 4, 1944, to May 7, 1945, in France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. During this period Sgt. Willis demonstrated superior qualities of leadership and proved to he an efficient and competent leader. His courage and devotion lo duty are a credit to the mili tary service." Local Information Panel To Meet With OPA The information panel of the local war price and rationing board is scheduled to meet in a district meeting in Asheville Fri day morning at the court house. Rev. L. G. Elliott is chairman of the local panel. The theme of dis cussion will be "an informed pub lic is a complying public." Lions To Attend Church In Body After Meeting The local Lions club will meet at the Maples on Walnut street tonight at 6:45 for supper and a brief business session Immediate ly after suoner lh club will ad journ to attend the revival meeting now in progress at the First Bap tist Church. Every member is urgently requested to be present at both the supper meeting at 6:45 and the church meeting at 7:30. At the last meeting of the club Captain Williams, rehabilitation officer for Haywood County spoke on "What the Lions Club Can Do for the Returning Service Man." He went to some length in setting forth his duties and the nature of his work with the military men of the county who are lieing returned to civilian life. He helps them wilh insurance claims, going back to school, .securing jobs, assisting in hospitalization, and other aids in adjustment to civilian life. His main thought and admoni tion to the Lions Club was, "Call the returning fellows men and not boys, unless he is your son, for these men have done a man s job." Next week's meeting will feature a program given by the activities committee on Community Better ment. Claud Gillstrap is chair man of this committee with Lions Hill Chambers and Jim Killian as co-members sharing the privileges and responsibilities. Lion Gilstrap has the feeling that one of the best ways to improve the happi ness of any community is through song and music. His motto for next week is: "Lions, let us sing!"
