PAGE EIGHT (Third Section? THE WATNEBVTLLE MOUNTAINEER Traffic Returns To Pre-War Mark Both Volume and Speed Levels of 1939 Reached Again, State Survey Shows James H. Burch, head of the sta tistics and planning division of the State Highway Commission, said this weke that a scries of surveys indicated North Carolina had re turned to its pre-war traffic volume and speed levels. The survey, conducted through road checking stations established at various points in the state, were held in February and early March. A three-day check on automobile speeds at seven checking stations earlier this month showed the aver age speed of all motor vehicles at about 44 miles per hour which was the pre-war level. Other facts revealed by the speed survey, Burch said, showed that 18 per cent of all motor ve hicles checked exceeded the 50-mile-an-hour speed limit, and that the average speed in March was seven miles faster than in the same month in 1942 and 1943, when rationing was at its height. The surcvy also showed that 50 per cent of all operators drove within the 39 to 48-mile-an-hour bracket, and that 85 per cent of all motorists drove under 51 miles an hour. Highest speeds were at tained by out-of-state cars, with passenger buses second. The pre-war traffic volume, Burch said, was reached early in February. Figures released earlier this month by the State Motor Vehicles Department showed that the regis tration of all types of motor vehi cles had already exceeded pre-war registrations.
