"Ye are My f.-ieud.. if ye do the things which I Command you") "THE FRIENDS of Jesus" Is the subject of our le.sson today. We think of Jesus s the Friend of all people; and rarely think of Him friends. Yet He made fn.nds warm, loyal friends all through His life on earth. The record of these friendships are told in the books written after His death by those who knew Him on earth What a wonderful friend He must have been! Children were His fii.nl.s and He was theirs Mark tells the story in his tenth chapter, how ihe women brought their children to Him to have Him touch thein. much as we today like to have our children meet and shake hands with or be patted on the head by some noted man. The disciples were annoyed that their leader should have His time taken up with things that to them .seemed unimportant Jesus thought differ ently. He was "much displeased," and said, "Suffer the little children to come unto Me. and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. "Verily I say unto you. whoso ever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. "And He took them up in His arms, put His hands upon them, and blessed them." Do you not suppose those children talked about this event all the days of their lives? Disciples ReengTil.e Messiah The next episode which seems to follow logically is the recogni tion of Jesus as the Messiah, by Andrew and Simon Peter, and also by Philip and Nathaniel John the Baptist, beholding Jesus walk ing, said aloud. "Behold the Lamb of God!" Two disciples heard him. and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned, saw them, and asked what they were seeking, and they asked Him where He lived "Come and see.'' replied the Master, and they went with Him and "abode with Him: for It wa3 about the tenth hour." One was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, who first found Simon, his brother, and said to lum, "We have found the Messi p.h," and brought him to Jesus. When Jesus looked at Simon He said, "Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, a .one." Picfrif. Philip found Nathaniel and told him, "We have found Him of; whom Moses In the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Naz areth, the son of Joseph." And Nathaniel asked skeptically. "Can any good thing come out of Naz areth?" Philip said. "Come and see" Jesus recognized Nathaniel and the latter was convinced that here was the Savior. In Luke, the sixth chapter, we are told of the choosing of Jesus' apostles: Simon Peter, his brother Andrew, James and John, Philip and Batholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes; Judas, brother of James, and Judas Iscariot These lived with Him. saw Him daily, shared their be longings with Him. "And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and in firmities, Mary called Magdalene (but not the adultress), out of whom went seven devils. And Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Her od's steward, and Suzanna, and many others, which ministered unto Him of their substance." Mary, Martha and Lazarus Mary and Martha and Lazarus, at whose home Jesus spent many happy times, were among His close friends, although their names are not Included in today's lesson. Another friend was Nicodemus. a Pharisee and "a ruler of the Jews." He was a member of the Sanhedrin, and must have' been much interested in this teacher, Jesus, of whom he had heard. "The same came to Jesus by night." because, being a prominent man, he probably did not at that time want to be associated with Him, at least until he had proved to himself whether or not he could accept Him. He was an educated man, a leader of his people, and he wanted to talk with the Personage who was said to be the Messiah. Another person whose life was changed for the good by Jesus was the woman whom He met at Jacob's well, the woman of Sama ria, of whom He asked a drink of water In the heat of the day. Out of the conversation Jesus had with her she went Into the city and brought out the men of Samaria to hear Him, and many believed. And at the end of Jesus' life on earth a friend came to save Him from being burled In a criminal's grave Joseph of Arimathea, "an honorable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God. came, and went in boldly unto Pi late, and craved the body of Jesus." This is an integral part of a successful marriage, but companionship with out affection and mutual interests soon becomes a dry and arid desert. Solitude is a blessing compared to the boredom that companionship alone brings. 2. PLKASUHK is more than pie A real marriage isure, it is hap- ing the cemetery. MEMORY VERSE John 15:14.' . of Counselor By HURKKkr Sl'AUGH, D. I). piness. Pleasure alone is like a pretty 1'aco or a line pair of should ers, of which one soon tires. ;i. FREEDOM. He who marries for freedom usually wants license, which breeds selfishness, and sel lishncss brings forth loneliness. 4. ADVENTURF. Marriage is not a land to explore and then go home. The adventurer in mar riage finds himself forever seeking, bill never finding. The good land is always on the other side of the mountain. ;. ECONOMIC SECURITY. I' was Esau who sold his birthright lor a good dinner and lived to re gret it. Those who marry for a meal tickets may get just that, but eventually learn that "man docs not live by bread alone." (j. CHILDREN AND FAMILY. Marriage is more than a scheme of Ihe Creator to propagate the race. Children brought into the world without their knowledge or consent deserve a home atmos phere of mutual affection and re spect. 7. SELF-REALIZATION. This places the emphasis upon self. He who marries for self finds a self realization which brings no com fort with Ihe advancing years. It is a foundation which crumbles. II. SELF-RESPECT. Again for self. Marirage for self-respect has a way of turning into sour milk which is not swallowed easily. it. HAPPINESS. Happiness with out love is impossible. It is not to he had for the seeking. It is a bi product of seeking the welfare of others. 10. LOVE. Love is the only en during foundation upon which a happy and successful marriage can be reared. It is the only solvent for the obstacles which beset the pathway of marriage. It is the only lubricant which can oil the wheels of matrimony as they grind the grist of life. It is the only cement which can bind together two differ ent personalities into a lasting union, "and the twain shall be one flesh." It is the only atmosphere in which a home can grow and develop. II is the only light which can illumine the dark of stormy days which come to all. Love has a way of blending all other reasons for marriage into a beautiful whole. Wtihout it mar riage may survive through defer- I once to duty and convention. With j it marriage becomes a glorious mutual adventure. ' Conserve Your Car!
