69 Examined
Sixty-nine children from twelve
elementary schools in the Canton
area of Haywood county were ex
amined at the two day eye clinic
held at Pennsylvania Avenue school
Monday and Tuesday of this week
The clinic was sponsored jointly
by the Canton Lions club and the
N. C. State Commission for the
Blind.
Seventeen children were fitted
with glasses and eye surgery was
recommended for eight others. V.
J. "Bill" Stone, president of the
Lions, stated that many of the
real needy children were not
reached, and due to this fact the
club has already made plans to
repeat the clinic next year.
Dr. Fleming, from Duke hospital,
conducted the clinic with assist
ance of Miss Kaye Reid Johnson,
N. C. medical social worker of
Charlotte, Mrs. Fannie Sell, Hay
wood county health worker, and
Mrs. Penny of the N. C. Commis
sion for the Blind. Plans for the
clinic were arranged by Floyd Rob
inson, chairman of the Canton
Lions' committee on sight conser
vation and blind work.
Four Canton high students. Judy
Patton, Vera Carter, Dorothy Helen
Worley and Doris Leflar, did the
clerical work and typing for the
clinic.
Mr. Stone announced that when
the prescribed glasses arrive the
parents will have the privilege
of paying for them, but if they
are not able to do so the Lions

stricken aboard the ship, oxygen was
rushed by air, and police were on
hand with a pulmotor to help fight

also plan to give financial aid in
these cases where needed.
Several cases of "squint eyes"
were called to the attention of
parents, which could be corrected
if they would see to it that the
children wear their glasses at all
times.
H is the purpose of all Lions
clubs in this state to cooperate
with the N. ('. Commission for the
Blind to the end that all children
who need eye care will receive
it, thereby improving their school
work, saving their eyes and mak
ing happier children.
