"WE HAVE had several lessons about Christ's friend.s while He was on earth. Now we take up His instructions to those closest to Him, the twelve, as to their work while He was still living nnd also after His death, resurrection and ascension. The first sending forth was of the twelve. "He called unto Him the twelve, and began to send them forth two by two; and gave them power over ur.eP an .spirits." He told them wlm' nuipmcnt they should take. V. ith no lux uries, simply cl.uk iii.-l with no money, they wen- i ' t the homes of familir . ..: wel come and enter', o i tl.i u; "They should tike nothing for their journey, save n staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: "But be shod with sandals; and rot put on two coats." "What place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that pl.o e." If they were not received in any house in a town, tiny were to "shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them." Those towns had their chance to entertain men of God, and to hear Hu me-sage, and if they refused, "It shall be more tol erable for Sodom nnd Gomorrha in trie day of judgment, than for that city." This was stern and ter rible punishment for these people who refused hospitality to the dis ciples of Him who sent them and would not listen to their message. They Freached Kopentance So the twelve went out, "and preached that men should repent. And they ca3t out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them." This is the only place where mention is made of oil for healing. It may have been that the use of healing oil gave the disciples new at the work confidence in them selves, and also it aided the faith of those who were treated. The twelve were sent out in January, 29 A. D. St. Luke tells of sending out the seventy, In the 10th chapter, and thla took place in December of the aame year 29 A. D. The seventy were also sent out two and two, and were told that they were needed asthe harvest la great, fci Carry neither purse, nor shoes: and salute no man Jesus commanded His Counselor sp.mkjh. d. d. lo be ale Practice it to be holy. Prayerfully they were to undertake this mis sion. "Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves." They, too, were Instructed to carry no purse, scrip or shoes, and in addition were told to "sa lute no man by the way." They were to wear sandals which had no uppers, but were tied by thongs to the feet. Shoes had uppers and protected the feet more thor oughly. Into "Whatsoever house ye en ter, first say, Peace be to this house." Into the house that received them they were to stay, "eating and drinking such things as they give; for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house." Not only were they to preach the gospel, but they were to heal the sick in these homes that opened to them, and "say unto them, The kingdom of God is come unto you." Again, if they were not Wel comed they were to shake the dust of the town from their feet, saying, "Even the very dust of ycur city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: not withstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you." They Return Joyfully The seventy returned joyfully, saving, "Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through Thy name." Jesus answered, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heav en. .. . Notwithstanding in this rejoice not. that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather re joice because your names are writ ten in heaven." The last Bible reference in our lesson tells of Jesus' warning to His disciples of what it will mean to them to dedicate their lives to Him. To a great multitude that followed Him, He said: "If any man come to Me, and hate not his father and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea. and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. "And whosoever doth not bear bis cross, and come after Me, can not be My disciple." Jesus knew too well the way He had trod in life, the weariness, heartaches and the martrydom. and unless His disciples under stood that His way must be their, they could never, carry on the work of their Master. They must sacrifice family, friends, even life Itself, to be disciples of their Lord., ILLUSTRATED. SUNDAY SCHOOL pture narK o.i-io, script, nor by the way, disciples.
