II. L. softhall league lead was expected lo he the hot test contest of the week, tonight's scheduled opener, with the Veter ans meeting the Tannery should be another close one that local fans will not want to miss. Tonight's 2nd game, in which the Lions meet Pet Dairy, should also be a good one. And on Thursday night the schedule calls for the Tannery to open against the Youth Club and the Roosters to clash with the Veterans. Unagusta was slated to meet the Youth Club in Monday night's second game. Last Thursrday the Tannery took nine hits off I'nagusta's Woodard, and tallied six runs while H. Rob inson held the furniture team to half that number. Pet Dairy proved too strong for the Youth Club, and racked up a 15-4 victory later that evening. With Smith at the mound for the Lions a close win was scored against the High School. Amnions hurled for the losers, who came out on the wrong end of a 10-9 score. Carswell pitched as his Vet erans collected 14 hits off Pet Dairy's Scruggs, and won the Fri day night second game 16-8. Scores for last week's games arc: Till RSnAY. II. 3 2 2 Finney Curtis And Miss Clauson Get Golf Prizes Three pairs of nylon hose were awarded in the past week-ends Blind Bogey tournaments at the Country Club golf links. Bert Finney and Laura May Clauson drew winning numbers after having picked a correct hand cap to put their score in the 70 s Saturday. Charles Curtis shot a straight 73 and out-drew George A. McKinley and George Bischoff for Sunday's prize. Finney took a handicap of 12 and turned in a 71 score. Miss Clawson chose a 24-stroke handicap and had 74 on her record in Saturday's play. Charles Curtis and W. II. Provost had 72's. On Sunday Paul Cochran took too much of a handicap, 22 strokes, and wound up with a 67 score that put him out of the prize drawing. Pisgah Preserve Has New Manager Named J. Wayne Wiggins, of Candler, has been appointed lo succeed James Longshore as refuge man ager of the Pisgah National Game preserve and the Sherwood Wild life area, Ranger Bill Huber an nounces. Mr. Longshore, who has elli cienlly handled this position since 1942. has resigned to enter private employment in Asheville. Mr. Wiggins has been a game protector since 1940 and has been on the Pisgah Reserve since 1945 Ranger Huber pointed out that Wiggins has had a good deal of ex perience in game management and in handling Hie public on game hunts and in public fishing. This victory, coupled with Sayles loss to Knka, left Ila.elwood the only undefeated team in the league. Saturday the Ila.elwood team goes to Biltmore to take on the Sayles team, which dropped a close 7- 6 game to Enka and remains tied at three wins to one loss for the runner-up spot in the league. In another till last week Green Hiver toppled Champion "Y" at Canton 15-13 for their first win of the season. Leading the attack for Hazel wood were Illalock, Yount, and Henry, each getting three hits for four trips to the plate, with Henry's ninth inning triple and score on a wild pitch putting the game on ice for Haelwood. Bud Blaloek pitched the entire game. The local team opened their fire works in the second. Blaloek, first up, singled. Yount doubled, scor ing Blaloek. Fore then came through with a single, Yount tak ing third. On a double steal Yount scored with Fore sale at, second. Henry singled Fore to third, and another double sleal put Fore at home, hut with an injured ankle. Clone Wyatt collected another sin. s.- and scored Henry before the side was retired. Beacon combined three hits with a walk to score two runs in the sixth. Their next lime at tin plate Vallincourl walked and stole second. Martin lined a grounder past third for a triple, and added Beacon's fourth tally as Buchanon grounded out to first. Henry's sixth tally for Hazelwood in the ninth took care of the run made by Buchanon as the Beacon team turned loose with a ninth in ning rally. A total of 29 persons were tried for violations of the game laws on the Pisgah Game preserve, and 27 were apprehended on the Sher wood area. Cases on the Pisgah preserve tried before U. S. Protests Close Of Deer Hunt Season BREVARD A resolution pro testing the closing of the deer hnntinc season in Western North Carolina and asking for at least a fifteen-day open season on bucks was unanimously passed at a meet- Park Streams Open Aug. 31 For Bass, I Fishing Rules Anno Open streams on the North Car olina side of the Smoky Mountain National park may be fished lor trout until August 31st and for ruck ' and small-mouthed bass from Jum- . 16 to August 31, according to re cently issued 1946 regulations. There is no open season on other species of fish. Night fishing i prohibited, and fishing for trout and bass is allowed only between , sunrise and sunset. Only artificial bait is allowed, and although the j number of flies is not restricted, j only one hook may be attached to each line, plug, or spinner. j Illegal sizes are trout under ! seven incnes, rocK nass under six and small mouth bass under 1! Inches in length. Ten fish per per son is the limit, with the exception that no one shall have more than five small-mouth bass. Under sized fish not seriously injured shall be returned to the water, while those retained because of se rious inury shall constitute part of the total limit. License Fees Haywood county residents are permitted to buy a county license only if they do their fishing within its limits, the annual fee being $1.10.
