Miss Sarah Louise Leatherwood Is
Wedded to Captain H. B. Phillips, II
Mr. and Mrs. Troy Leatherwood,
of Waynesville, R.F.D. No. 2, have
announced the marriage of their
daughter Miss Sarah Louise Leath
erwood to Captain Horace Burton
Phillips, II. son of Mr. aud Mrs.
H. W. Phillips, of Hardeevme, S.
C. The marriage was solemnized
in Bennettsville, S. C. on October
the 18th.
Mrs. Phillips is a graduate of the
Waynesville Township high school,
Peace Junior College, and was gra
duated from the University of
North Carolina in 1943. She has
also taken graduate work in soci
ology at the University, after which
she held a position with the Hay
wood county Welfare board. For
the past eighteen months Mrs.
Phillips has been with the Ameri
can Red Cross as a hospital social
worker, having taken a number of
courses given for her work by the
organization. While a student in
college she won recognition by her
scholarship and participation in the
college programs.
Mrs. Phillips is the granddaugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. James R.
Boyd, Jr., having spent sometime
here with her grandparents. She
is a member of the Donas Bell
Love Chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution
Captain Phillips graduated from
the Citadel, Charleston. S. (.'.. in
the class of 1942 and has served
in the armed forces since that
lime. He was on duty in the Eur
opean theater and has been award
ed the Purple Heart and the
iironze Star. He is currently sta
tioned at Fort Bragg. Capt. Phil
lips is well known in Asheville j

Beta Group Here
Theresa Alley has been elected
president of the National Beta
club at the Waynesville Township
high school. National Beta is a
service leadership organization for
high school seniors, with active
members in 16 states. Several
Haywood county high schools have
perfectd organizations this year.
Others who will serve are vice
president. Jack Noland and sec
retary. Nancy Jones.
Miss Marearet Terrell, teacher
of English, has been appointed
faculty sponsor for the Waynes
ville club. The following students
are eligible for membership: Jean

also had with them during Christ
mas, Staff Sgt W. J. Wolfkeil. U. S.
Marine Corps, currently stationed

To Hold January
Meetings On Tuesday
The circles of the Woman's So
ciety of Christian Service of the
First Methodist Church will hold
their regular January meetings on
Tuesday. January 7th as follows:
Circle Number one will meet
with Mrs. Guy Massie at 3:30 in
the afternoon.
Circle Number two will hold
their meeting with Mrs. Jimmy
Boyd at 3:30 in the afternoon.
Circle Number four land three'
will meet with Miss Helen and
Miss Frances Ray at 7:30 o'clock.
Circle Number five will have a
dinner meeting at the home of
Mrs. Bill Cobb at 6:45 with Mrs.
Cobb, Mrs. Harry Lee Liner. Jr.,
and Mrs. Charles Balentine as
joint hostesses.
Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Fulton of
Orlando, Fla., spent a few days
last week with the latter's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Green, at their
home in Fines Creek. They came

Dance Tuesday
Approximately 125 young people
attended the New Year's Eve
formal dance given by Beta Gama
fraternity at the Hazel wood cafe
teria, celebrating their fourth anniversary.
Punch, cookies and other re
freshments were served. Recorded
music was played over a loud
speaking system for the dancing.
At 12 o'clock balloons were let
down from overhead and the celeb
rants sang Auld Lang Syne to wel
come the new year.
Roy Rogers, president of the
fraternity, was in charge of ar
rangements, and Mr. and Mrs. Boh
Miller chaperoned the group. The
dance lasted from 8:39 p.m. tol2:3(i

The bride, who was given in
marriage hy her brother, Mr. Gates
Jordan, wore a gown of Ivory slip
per satin, with a net overskirt,
which fell in a long full train. The
neckline of the gown was scal
loped in seed pearls and I he sleeves
