TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, $ PAGE FOUR THE WAYNES VILLE MOUNTAINEER Plans Discussed For District UDC Meeting To Be Held Here In May Mrs. Grover C. Davis had the paper of the afternoon at the Feb ruary meeting of the Haywood Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy which was held on Friday afternoon at "Windover" with Mrs. J. Harden Howell as hostess. Mrs. Davis spoke on the life of Sidney Lanier, giving a number of his most outstanding poems, and telling of his place in American literature. Prior to her part on the program, Mrs. Noble Garrett reviewed the organization magazine, reading in full an article regarding the plac ing of a bust of Sidney Lanier in the Hall of Fame. During the business session. Miss Nancy Killian, historian, told of the contest held at the Waynesville Township high school commemor ating the birthdays of Lee and Jackson. She stated that Mark Rog ers was the winner of the contest and was presented the regulation UDC medal, with his declamation The South of Yesterday and To day"; Duane Oliver won second place and Danny McClure was giv en third place by the judges. Mrs. J. R. Boyd, vice president gave a report of a similar rontes' held at the Clyde high school in which Bruce Caldwell won the medal with his speech. Callers Donate $104.50 At Library Benefit The silver offerings at 'he bene fit tea sponsored by the 'Voman's club on Saturday afternoon at the Haywood county Library total $104.50, it was learned from the president, Mrs. Charles E. Ray, Jr. who was general chairman of the affair. The tea was given in recog nition of the third anniversary of ounty-wide library service in Hay vood county, with the hoars from I to 5 o'clock. The money donated Saturday af ernoon by callers and business nen who sent in generous checks will be used for the purpose of buy ing new books for the library. Tea was served from a lace cov ered table centered with an ar angement of red and blue flowers n a crystal epernge. Pouring the first hour was Mrs. James W. Kil ian, the second. Hussion tea. sandwiches and cookies weif served those calling. f Former Canton Girl Weds In Atlanta, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Haynes of Canton have announced the mar riage of their daughter. Miss I-rera n Gwendolyn Haynes. to Wil liam Frank Hutchinson of fiastniitp The wedding took place on Decem ber 19 at the North Avenue Pres byterian church in Atlanta. Ga. Dr. Vernon S. Broyles. Jr.. offi ciated, using the double ring cere mony. The church was decorated with candles, greenery and white chrysanthemums. A program of wedding music was presented by Mis. Walter Spivey. organist, and Miss Flora Skidrus. soloist. The bride, who was given in mar riage by her father, wore a gown of white satin made with marqui sette yoke, long litled sleeves and full skirt extending into a circular train. Her Iwo-tiered fingertip veil w as attached to a coronet of orange blossoms, and she carried a white Bible topped with sweetpeas and white camellias showered with white satin ribbons. Mrs. Tom Creighton of Mullins. S C. was matron of honor. She wore a pale blue gown and a head dress of pink velvet ribbon. She carried a bouquet of pink carna tions. Bob Hutchinson of Charlotte was best man. and ushers were Gene Haynes. brother of the bride, and Tom Riddle of Clover. S. C. The bride js a graduate of Clyde high school and of Coker college, and is a member of the Alpha Psi Omega fraternity. Mr. Hutchinson was recently honorably discharged from the service. He served four years with I ho Marines, most of which time was spent in the Pacif ic theater of operations. The couple will reside in Atlanta. Mrs. Queen To Be Hostess Of DAR Meeting The February meeting of the Dorcas Bell Love Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revo lution will be held on Friday after noon with Mrs. John M. Manitoba Canada, who Ix-fore her marriage was Miss Mary Elizabeth Rogers, daughter of J. F. Rogers and the late Mrs. Rogers, of Clyde. Her marriage took place on Saturday afternoon, January 8, in the Mance of Knox United Church, Brandon, Manitoba. Haywood Girl Is Wed To Former Flying Officer, Canadian Air Force Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Mary Eliza beth Rogers, daughter of Mr. J. Iv Rogers, and the late Mrs. Rogers of Clyde, to Mr. Robert Earl Rut ledge of Brandon, Manitoba. Can ada, which took place on Saturday afternoon. January 25th, at four o'clock in the Mance of the Knox United Church, Brandon, Manitoba. For her marriage the bride wore a dress of steel grey wool, with a pink feather hat with veil, white gloves and her other accessories were in black. Her corsage was of pink carnations. Mrs. Rutledge is a graduate of the Clyde high school and attend ed Western Carolina Teachers Col lege at Cullowhee. where she studid voice and took a secretarial course. For a few years she held a position with the United States Government, in the Army Engin eering Department, and was sta tioned during this period at a num ber of places including Miami, Fla., Hcceife' and" Rio de Janeiro, South America, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Bermuda. For the past several months she has held a position in Brandon, Manitoba. Mr. Rutledge is the son of Dr. E. J. Rutledge of Erickson, Mani toba. He received his education at St. James College, in Winnipeg. Manitoba. He served as a flying of ficer in the Royal Canadian Air Give Her Hose For A VALENTINE Weds Canadian Benefit Bridge Scheduled For Friday Night There will be a benefit bridge party given under the auspices of the Waynesville Woman's club this Friday evening, according to Mrs. Chas. K. Ray, Jr , president. The affair will be given at Oak Park. The plans are to have fourteen tables in play with a number of attractive prizes to be given to the winners of top scores. The guests arc asked to assemble promptly at 7:45 as the games will start at 8:00 o'clock and those who are late will miss this part of their scores. Mrs. Chas. E. Ray has been in charge of the sale of tickets and making up the tables, while Mrs. James W. Killian is serving as chairman of refreshments. Mrs. C. F. Kirkpatrick is in charge of the prizes. Ratcliff Cove Club will meet with Mrs. R. C. Francis on. Mon day afternoon the 17th at 2 00 o'clock. Waynesville Honicmakers club will meet on Tuesday evening, the 18th, at 7:30 o'clock with Mrs. Lawrence Leatherwood. The Bethel club with Mrs. Jack McCracken, on Wednesday after noon the 19th, at 2:00 o'clock. Maggie club with Mrs. C. L. White on Thursday afternoon, the 20th, at 2:00 o'clock. Crabtree Club and the Hyder Mountain clubs will combine their meetings and have a joint gather ing on Friday, the 21st at 2:00. o'clock. The Clyde club will hold an all day meeting with Mrs. George Rogers on Tuesday the 25th, the members assembling at 10:30. The Cecil club will meet at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the 26th with Mrs. J. Edgar Burnette as hostess. The West Canton club will hold their meeting at the Patton school on Thursday the 27th at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon. Junaluska Club will meet with Mrs. Car! Mrs. Kennedy Hostess Friday lonathan Club The Jonathan Creek Home Demonstration clut met on Friday afternoon with Mrs. Frank R. Ken nedy, with Miss Mary Margaret Smith, Haywood county Home agent, in charge of the program. Miss Smih gave the monthly pro gram on "Foods in Relation to Health," and discussed the seven basic foods and how they affected health. Project leaders gave reports as follows: Family Life, Mrs. C. O. Newell; Crafts, Mrs. Glenn Boyd; Foods and Nutrition, Mrs. Medford Leatherwood; Gardens, Mrs. Lee Howell; Poultry, Mrs. Frank R. The meeting was opened with the patriotic ritual with Mary Barber, Cary Howell, Nancy Pre vost and Anne Harden bringing in the flags. Harriett Gibson led in the CAR creed. Taking part on the program were Lane Prevost who gave a sketch of the "Life of George Washing ton"; Adora Prevost, who gave a piano solo, "The Cello"; Anne Har den who told the story of "Buff and Brown Going to Market." Lane Prevost played a piano solo, "The Man in the Moon". The hostesses served refresh ments assisted by their mother. Special guests were Mrs Adora Raines and Mrs. Richard Barber. Jr. Announcement was made that the next meeting would be with Allen Harte on March 10th. The demonstration of the after noon was presented by Miss Mary Margaret Smith, county home agent, who spoke to the group on "Food in Relation to Health". Miss Belle McCracken who has been a patient in the Aslon Park Hospital in Asheville, is reported to be improving. She has decently been moved to the Haywood Coun ty Hospital.
