W-Il Softball major division sweep
stakes as the season officially got
under way thi week, while Sut
ton's 2 and the High School went
In the victory column among the
minors.
Tonight la an open date on the
softbaii schedule in deference to
the senior play; Monday- the teams
will begin their second week' with
the Lions taking on the High
School- at1 7 p. m and- Pet Dairy
entering, the arena against Sut
ton's 1 in the main event.

opened. Kd Boone's Lions, play
ing Sutton's juniors, got Into a 14

which they were never able to
emerge, although they put up a
stiff fight the remainder of the
game. The final score wan 18-10.
Despite Bronson Robinson's two
hit hurling, the Tannery showed
some fancy base running to defeat
Sutton's varsity 8 to 3. Blalock's

runs to- give the Ai C. Lawrence
men their winning margin
In Tuesdays games the High
School' came from behind the last
two innings to defeat the Youth
Club 15 to 13. Sheehan and J. D.
Caldwell turned in homers for
their respective teams. The main
event looked like a run-away for
the National' Guard as they tallied
10 men in tHe first Inning. Dayton
settled dowfv; held' the Guardsmen
to one score thereafter, and pro
vided the bat work to-edge ahead
12-11 before the game ended.

Both teams have won four games
and lost one. Hazelwood last week
was nosed out 10 to 9 by Champion
Y, while Becon was taking the
measure of Sayles, 8 to 5.
Although Bud Blalock's team
can be expected to hold their own
in batting, the question mark of
the game will be whether Hazel
wood's pitching; can "keep Beacon
under control, ' For . the last two
weeks Jack Case has carried' both
assignments, Blalock being-unable
to assist due to an injured right
arm.

lected in 1943 from Rhodlss Dam
by Luther Skaggs, superintendent
of the division s Marion nsn naien
ery, and released In the TVA inv
Doundments. This season has
brought the first real payoff. Prior
to this year, crappie had not ap
peared in catches from Santeetlah,
and had appeared only in limited
numbers In catches from the other
lakes.
In addi n to the large fish
which ar eing taken, consider
able young crappie are being ob
served in the lakes further evi
dence that the management meas
ure has taken firm hold.
