H. S field at 3 o'clock. Hendersonville was beaten 10-8 in the initial game Monday witli Floyd King hurling for Canton and Bill Henson catching and blasting a homer. Tuesday the Valdese Juniors out slugged Canton for an 8-4 verdict. Manager Floyd DeWeese used two pitchers, Don Stiles and Wayne Loftin, but Valdese went ahead early and made matters worse in the eighth when Powell knocked a home run. Henson again hit a hoiner for Canton, but the bases were empty at the time. Thursday afternoon the Canton team was slated to play at New land, then continue the district elimination Saturday against Ruth-erfordton. The teams will tee off at 1:30 p.m. on the Country Club course. Dayton, alter getting oil to a slow start, lias recorded some top-heavy wins in recent league matches, and Coach John McConnelly hope's they can follow through to win the first postwar title. In other matches Sunday, Bea con plays Champion V at the Muni cipal links, Enka meats Moore General at Beaver Lake, and Postal Accounts takes on Sayfes at the Muny. ASHEVILLE's entry in the Tri-State loop is having its troubles in an effort to get into the winning column in the league standings. At a late date they had six men in the regular lineup who were batting over 330, yet, paradoxically, they don't seem to be able to make them count insofar as the run-making goes at a critical moment in the games. Our guess is that ere the season is over the Tourists will be well up in the league standings, provided they can find a couple of fair hurlers to give much needed support to "Gabby" Park- .hurst, one" of the league's leading pitchers. iims Saves you Moiey on IKES ip4 ev Goodyears Qir Recaps 16 Tires, Installed on Your Car. 11 2JSQ PLUS TAXES F Price S17.9.R Di Tv aves You $4.48 SbisSc Save On Recapping 6.00x16 Tires $4.90 We Guarantee Our Work The Finest Recapping Plant In Western Carolina ALL SIZE TIRES ME REDUCED r of Treads r Equipment EM fire and Battery Co. WHOLESALE RETAIL TIRES AND BATTERIES National Guard And Pel Dairy Clash The Tannery evened their recwrd with Dayton Rubber in a nip and tuck battle Tuesday evening, blast ing four runs in the sixth frame to hand the Daytonites their first loss ef the eurrent season, 10 to 7. Tonight the W-H League pro gram brings out Pet Dairy against the National Guard In the major division game, with a recasting of the Youth CJub-Itigh School scrap getting under way at 7 o'clock. Monday evening the High School meets the Lions m the opener, with Dayton taking on the Sut ton's varsity, another strong chal lenger for major division honors, in the wain event. Lions Take 1st Win Starling off this week's sched ule was a slugfest between the Youth Club and Lions. The first half of the game looked like a walkaway for the Youth Clubbers, but an 8-run rally by the Lions in the fifth turned the tide, and the old men of the minors backed hurler Boyd Owen to squeeze off a final stanza attack and win their first tilt of the season, 1? to 16. Sutton'! Shut-Out N. G. Bronson Robinson tossed an even dozen strikeouts to give Sutton's 1 a decisive 9-0 win over the Nation al Guard, atfowing only four well spaced hits. Ken Troutman made his tossing debut with the Guards men, but the Sutton's swingers connected for 11 safeties to get an early lead that was never threatened. Sutton's Juniors Win In Tuesday's opener the Sutton's Juniors out-scrapped the Lions in another slugging match. Tied 10- all in the fifth, Yarborough and Howell knocked home two runs the next Inning, and Camp and Sut ton tripled to feature a last frame spree that ieed the game for a final 17 to 12 score. Dayton Palls To Tannery Before one of the largest crowds of the season, the A. C. Lawrence men cam from behind to hand the previously unbeaten Dayton team their first Joss, 19 to 7. Glenn Wyaft's triple sparked a 4. run attack to put Dayton ahead. Then in the third, two Dayton mis cues and singles by Dudley and Yount tied the score. In the fifth the Tannery went ahead as Lane blasted a three-nagger, Dudley was hit by a pitched ball, and Hen ry singled to seor two. They add ed four more in the sixth as Phil- Hps relieved Presatey on the mound, then cut off Dayton in the final after Bruce Jaynes walloped a homer to score two. Bob Put nam pitched for the winners Locals Gun For Seventh Win Of Year Industrial League win number 7 will be the target as Bud Blalock's Haze I wood bombers take the field Saturday afternoon for their second nmsting against Enka in the cur rent season. The game win begin at 3; 30 p.m. on the local diamond. This game marks the start of the second round of play in the WNC circuit, with Hazelwood standing in top place by virtue of only one loss in seven starts. To date Manager Blalock is un certain about the starling Hazel wood battery. Lawrence Crocker, who bore the brunt of last Satur day's 15-7 win over Sayles, has sported a sore arm that may nut be ready for this week's tilt. If Crocktfr isn't ready, Jack Case may get the nod, with Blalock standing by for relief duty on the mound. Jack Smith also is a question mark, although if the "Sheriff" isn't available for the catching as signment Gordon Wyatt has vol unteered. Enka, although beaten 11-3 in the season opener, has stayed in the upper bracket since that time, and last week walloped Martel Mills 9 to 2 the team that Hazel wood squeezed by 9-8 in a lant inning rally. Other circuit encounters this week take Canton to Martel, Beacon to Green River and Kcusta to Sayles. Bob Allen Vivas Medalist Honors In Asheville Open Waynesville's Bob Allen took medalist honors in the Asheville City Open golf . tournament, thus repeating Charles Putnam's feat the previous week in the Beaver Lake meet, but was sent to the sidelines in the quarter-finals on Wednesday at the hands of Biemait McKenzie, Jr. McKenzie, an Asheville golfer who played with the Clemson col lege team this spring, defeated Al len two and one. This placed him in the semi-finals against Bob Cole; while Al Dowtin who defeated the Beaver Lake Champion, J. C. Hy att, in the quarter-final round- then stretching their lead against the home team's second hurler, Welch, with five more in the eighth. Blalock hM a home run and triple, while Bradley recorded a homer for the losers. Scruggs went the stretch on the All-Star mound, allowing nine hits. EAGLE SPECIALIST Allen la noted for his long drives or the Waynesville Coun try chib course. Last week, in fonr days playing, he shot an eagle three times on the S15 yard 15th note; teeing off across the road onto the green within patt ing distance of the hole, and getting In two shots what par ays shonld he done in four. was matched with Hugh Edwards. Allen fhot a two under par 70 to become the qualifying medalist Monday. He was the only Hay wood linksman to enter the Ashe ville Open. In his first flight match Tuesday, he took on Stumpy Harris, a lfi-year-eld caddy at Beaver Lake, who couldn't match Allen's drives, but showed such an expert game on the green, it was the 18th hole before Harris, lost, one up.
