Service , Family Sunday was observed at the First Methodist Church last Sunday morning when the pastor, Rev. Paul Townsend, extended a special invitation to all members to : attend the service with their faro ilies, including the smallest chil dren. A large congregation attended. 1 Mrs. J. K. Boone and Mrs. B. F. j Smathers were the oldest mem bers present and were presented ! corsages of red roses. Mrs. Pink i Martin, who has been a member of the church for 62 years, was also at the service. Little Joseph Smalley Davis, eight month old son of Mr. and ! Mrs. Joe "Davis, and the youngest person present was given a New Testament. The Boyd Family with twenty one m&nbers there had the largest representation and Miss Bessie Boyd received a book as a token to be taken to her father, J, R Boyd, who is ill. He did it on the same H5-yard hole last year with a nine iron. Mr. Flowers is responsible for all the programs and their arrangement. He has been in radio for many years and feels very much at home before a microphone. (photo by Ingram's Studio.) George Flowers Makes Ur AH Programs For WHCC The responsibility of what goes on the air for WHCC and at what time, rests on the shoulders of George Flowers, progrtm director. Flowers actually lives radio he's bubbling over with enthusiasm and is giving every program care- lul consideration. If a person wants to appear on a program, he first make sure they have talent and can attain a standard set by the station. He is constantly hold ing interviews and auditions. While his hnhhv is prefers the work he is in right now arranging programs. Flowers first became inter rairri actively in radio while m student at Clemaon college where he studied radio and did program at WAiM in Anderson, 8. C. After leaving t,iemaon n was connected with WHKY in Hickory as a general art porta announcer for two )ars and a hall before enUrtag tb Navy in, January, 1942. Flowers served as a radarman aboard ships of the Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets and was aboard a minesweeper at the inva sion of Sicily. His ship was sunk off the beach and he picked up 46 pieces of shrapnel, a Purple Heart and a trip back to the States after a year overseas. The next year he spent at the Charleston naval hospital, doubling in brass at the public relations of fice at the naval base and broad pasting over Charleston's Station WCSC and at Savannah, Ga.'s WTMA. He returned to WHKY for nine months, spent a year at WATS In Charlotte doing sports and news, and went to Shelby at the opening ot WOHS as chief announcer. He and Mrs..
