In fact, that we employ but a small fraction of our abilities, and that if we could release' them 'all they would add immeasurably to our efficiency and capacity- to meet life's problems and win success. , Books and magazine articles on this subject suggest how we may develop these unused talents and put them to work in the world. Few, however, ever learn the secret and harness it for use. to their own and the world's good. In today's lesson, we find 12 humble, unlearned men gathered in a room waiting for Jesus' 'promise that such power would come to them to help them carry (on His work. It was on the day of Pente cost a solemn Jewish festival celebrated on the 60th day (seven weeks) after the Passover that "suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the Acts t:l-il. pour "out My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams." Then Peter spoke of Jesus, whom "ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain; Whom God hath raised up." David, he said, had spoken con cerning these things which all those present had witnessed. The hearts of the multitude were pricked when they heard Peter's speech, and they asked what they should do, Peter an swered,' "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Glvost" "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." With many other words did Peter "testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this un toward generation." "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the MEMORY VERSE "Repent ye and be baptized every one of you in the' name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins: and ye shall re- ceive the gift of the Holy Spirit." "Acts t:t8. house where they were sitting." After the wind there appeared cloven tongues "like as of fire, and it sat upon each of theme" All were filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak in other languages than their "own. " ' 'Living in Jerusalem were de vout men of many nations, and when they were told of this unheard-of thing, they were amazed, and a multitude came to see and hear with their own eyes and ears. They were still more as tonished when they heard the apostles utter words that they could understand though they came "out of every nation under heaven." Among this jnStley throng were Parthian s, Medes, Elamites, dwellers from Mesopotamia, Ju daea, CappadoCia, - pontus and Asian fromv northern Africa ' Lybia, Egypt, "strangers from Rome," in Europe, etc. Some of the throng were mere ly amazed and in doubt, others said the apostles were durnk. But Peter, standing up, lifted up hs voice and denied that they had been drinking wine, but that the power that had come to them waS the fulfillment of a prophecy ly Joel, namely: "And it shall come to pass. in the last days, saith God, I will same day there were added Unto them about three thousand souls." . This was the first sermon preached by a member of the first Christian church after Jesus' ascension. Men of many nations heard it and spread the . word abroad in their lands. To day this "same gospel is preached in many lands that no one knew existed at that time. Our world is immensely larger than that old world of which the Bible speaks. It is larger, and at the same time, it is a smaller world. Today we know much more about it that it is indeed "one world." We travel over it in trains, buses, boats, airplanes. We receive the news from, the farthest corners by radio, tele graph and from peo-lc who have visited these far-off places. In tt times, people have been troubled by the same earthly problems hunger, bad- housing, lack of proper clothing, etc., but now, if we will with God's help we can do something to rem edy these ills. "What would Jesus do?" That is a challenge to all of us young and old. Power will be given us if we believe and make up our minds to follow in His footsteps going about doing good. For our actions speak louder than words, and a real Christian acta his religion. r";l on copyrighted outline produced by The International Council of Rellfious .'..mum anu ud by jwriuumun.
