MARGARET JOHNSTON
COUNTY LIBRARIAN
LIBRARIES IN THIS AREA
My staff and I have been visiting
some of the libraries in this area
quite recently. First, we went over
to see Mi.su Margaret Llgon at the
Pack Memorial Library in Aslie
ville. She took us on a tour of her
Library beginning with the Dis
play Room, which was converted
from a wasted basement area into
a very attractive and useful piuce.
The Tern Wolfe exhibit is being
held there now. Then we saw the
circulation department, the office,
ordering and processing depart
ment, periodical and reference
room, the Sondley Reference Col
lection and finally the children's
room up on Fourth Floor. The
Sondley Reference Library probr
bly has the best collection of Its
type in the Southeast. Can you
imagine having in that collection
alone around 35,000 books nearly
three times our book collection?
These bioks are purely for refer
ence and do not circulate. We
missed seeing the Bookmobile as
it was out 'n tne County, The Pack
Memorial Library's problem is the
same as our?, the lack of space.
Later, W'c went to Bryson City
to see the Fontana Regional Li
brary under the direction of Mrs.
Helen Kittrell. There we saw an
entirely different' type from the
city library. In this type we saw
how three counties Macon, Jack
son and Swain are working to
gether with small libraries in
Franklin, Sylva and Bryson City
and a bookmobile to serve the en
tire area The Bookmobile is in
each courty a certain number of
days each month. Books are left
at deposit stations with a few
places having direct service that
of the people meeting the Book
mobile. It is exactly the opposite
from our Bookmobile service which
is mostly direct service with a
few deposit stations. Books from
the regional collections or the li
braries are available for use any
where they are needed. We saw
too, the library in Bryson City
and we had a nice time exchang
ing ideas with Mrs. Harvey Breed
love and Mrs. Kittrell. Incidental
ly, the Regional Library Board
there, has voted to send their Li
brary Staff on a tour of libraries
next month and ours is on their list
along with Asheville, Rutherford
ton, Gastonia, Charlotte, Newton,
Morganton, Marion and Burnsville.
It is certainly good experience, for
we certainly . feel closer to the
ones we visited and we are glad
we beat them to the visit.
