Bill Milner and Charlie Justice, two of the great All-America foot-,
ball players that Western North Carolina has produced, will lecture ,
at the Western Carolina Teachers' College football coaching school, '
this summer. Bill, the Hazelwood boy who became an All-America ,
guard at Duke in 1943, played for the Chicago Bears for the last
three seasons. Charlie, the University of -Nprth Carolina's great
taflhack, is closing his brilliant college career this June at Com
mencement. .

Hazelwodd Elementary School is
tlie basketball champion of the
Waj'uesville District grade schools
no matter how you look at it.
The boys and glrU wound up
Uie long Haywood County basket
ball season last Friday" at the
Waynesville High School gym in
the finals of the annual District
Elementary School tournament.
The, Hazelwood boys won their
crown, by licking. Central Elemen
tary, 18-14, and the Hazelwood
girls made it, complete by defeat
ing the Maggie lassies, 20-9, in the
finals match. "
Miss Brendle and Miss Myers,
both of ; the Hazelwood sextet,
shared high scoring honors in the
girls' game by netting ten. points
each.
Moore of Hazelwood and Cald
well of Central were the top men
in the boys' battle with six points
each.
The Hazelwood girls jumped off
to an 8-1 lead in the first period
and never were headed, though the
Maggie lassies closed it. to 10-5 by
half time. .-,-
The Hazelwood boys had a fight
on their hands all the way. They
lead 2-0 at the end of the first
period, 8-4 at half time, 14-10 at
the end of the third.
In the first round which opened
the tournament earlier in the week,
Miss Grant, bucketing 13 points,
led the Maggie girls to a 25-6
verdict over the Central Elemen
tary sextet.
The Central Elementary boys,
with. Gardner and'Messer leading
the way, whipped Maggie's boys,
50-17.
The Maggie girls came through
the third round on a 27-16 win
oyer Lake Junaluska, while the
Central hoys were walloping the
Junaluska boys, 25-7.
Hazelwood's girls and boys didn't
swing into action until the semi
final round, when the girls rolled
over East Waynesville, 34-5, and
the, boys bumped East Waynes
villq's boys, 35-10.
That set the stage for the cham
pionship, match., , v
