week . , . one exciting time, yet
sad. All of the seniors exchanged
cards with each other and then
gave the underclassmen one so

name has a certain magic to It.
We seniors certainly found out

the. city from .-.'April 17 through
April 22. For the benefit of those
poor unfortunate souls who had to
work at school all that week', this

arrivals had just' made it). , 'We

Lt. James Queen, who lost his
life on September 15. 1943. was
featured in an article by Robert C.
Ruark, noted Scrlpps-Howard col
umnist, in the April 28 issue of
the New York World-Telegram, and
other newspapers of that chain.
Mr. Ruark, one of the top-salar
ied columnists of the country (in
the $75,000 to $100,000 salary
bracket) was a close friend of Lt.
Queen, and had visited the Queens
In Waynesville on a number of oc
casions. They were roommates at
Chapel Hill during their college
days, and later were associated in
the same offices In Washington
Mr. Ruark, in writing about the
method of selecting unknown sol
diers, under the title "Your Un
known" devoted about three-
fourths of his column to Lt.'Queen.
Columnist Ruark points out that
the method used is a pagan custom
and a "monument to a stupid con
flict". Then he goes on to say:

The first thing on the list was
the Capitol building. We saw this,
the Supreme Court Building,' and
the Shakespearean Library in the

beauty and splendor of these build

After a quick lunch, we were
off again to visit the Monastery, the
Zoo, and the Cathedral. We learn

lied .about his leg and got himself
a two-biY ensign's commission and
volunteered for the small craft end
of the job' and Wound up shoving
a scow from the Cape Bon penin
sula to Italy and Sicily. And al
ways knowing, with the queer in
tuition of the candidates for death,
that he was going to catch one with
the top of his head. This was the
way a mai like Queen repaid a
country he liked for allpwlng him
to be born In lt and live in it.
So sure enough they blew him
up and he was listed as missing
and presumably dead and they
never found so much as a speck
