Hear Report Of
Tourist Official
The members of the Waynesnlle
Lions Club last Thursday night
heard Mrs. Doyle Alley, secretary
of the Western North Carolina
Tourist Association, discuss the
growth of the Tar Heel tourist in
dustry.
Mrs. Alley, who's also office sec
retary for the North Carolina Na
tional Park. Parkway, and Forests
Commission, backed up htr state
ments by citing official figures.
These showed, she said, that the
Great Smoky Mountaius National
Park had more visitors than any
other, similar area in the entire
nation last summer more than.l,
300,000 people from every state in
the naUon visited this area.
ine tigures also showed that,
dollar for dollar, North Carolina
got a greater return on its adver
tising money than the state which
leads the nation in advertising investment.
Mrs. Alley reported that North
Carolina ranked 11th in the nation
last year in total tourist business,
which reached over $250,000,000.
That meant $10 worth of tourist
business for every dollar spent in
state advertising,
.this return substantially exceed
ed that of Oklahoma, which spent
more than $80Q,00Q in advertising
more than any other single state
in the natjon, as far as this pur
pose was concerned.
She declared thatihough North
Carolina jn general and this west
err" section in particular has had a
tpurist business for the last half
century, that it has been only dur
ing the recent years that any par
ticular agency or agencies were set
up specifically to develop this great
source of income-which current
ly rates as North Carolina's third
greatest industry.
She explained the work of the
Western North Carolina Associat
ed Communities and its "children"
the Cherokee Historical Associa
tion, the recently-completed west
ern North Carolina industrial sur
vey, the WNC Tourist Association,
the State Parks Commission, among
the principal ones.
She also reported that to dale
11 of the western counties had each
organized a local Tourist Associ
ation, charged with the compiling
of data on available tourist facili
ties and With the promotion of the
maintenance of high standards in
these accommodations. , i
Also .during the course of the
session, Jimmy McJunkin, son of
Mr. and Mrs. S. J1. McJunkin of
Balsam, was named, as Honorary
Lion for the month of May.
Jimmy, an outstanding student in
his classroom work, is editor of the
1950 Waynesville Township High
School annual, and active also in
many other student and church af
fairs.-
