Habakkuk Teaches Trust in God JEHOVAH WILL OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD Scripture By NEWMAN CAMPBELL WHY DOES evil exist in the World? Why dd wicked men and women flourish and the good Buffer? Why' does God permit God-fearing men and women to go hungry "ill-clothed, ill-housed and IJl-fed," and ruthless, greedy people to have all the necessities and luxuries of life? These were questions that wor ried people in Old Testament days more than 2,000 years ago just as they trouble us of today. " The Prophet Habakkuk, who is thought to have lived during the reign of Jehoiakin 609-597 B. C. was distressed by it, and decid ed that trust in God and .faith were the answers. Maybe we can reach the same conclusion. Let us study his words: V 'The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. "O Jehovah, how long shall I cry, and Thou wilt hot hear? I cry out unto Thee of violence, and Thou wilt not save. "Why dost Thou show me in ittv and look upon perverse- ness? for destruction and vlo hefore me: and there is strife, and contention riseth up. Habakkuk. rftiiu went to live in a watch tower, which was built to scan the countryside for possible ne. mies, but he retired to a quiet place where he could think and t-onenn nut the nroblem of life. The illustration accompanying this lesson will snow me cnuurwi what a watch tower was like. no children read Pilarim'a Progress any more? This writer did as a child, and still has a copy. In one chapter when Hope i,, anri nhrOttinn. were on their way to the Celestial City, Hopeful told Christian that when ne was greatly perplexed, the words of Habakkuk came to his mind. They were: "I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what H will say unto me." "And: .Tphnvnh answered me. said Habakkuk, "and said, Writ the vision, and make it plain upon tablets, that he may run that readeth It." Not "He who runs may read," but "he may run that readeth it." It surely means that he who reads it should run to tell of the message. Habakkuk asks what idol wor ship brings to the worshiper. "Woe unto him that saith to th MEMORY VERSE " will rejoice in Jehovah, I will joy in the God of my . salvation."-Habakkuk 3:18. ,.fufr, the law is slacked, and Justice doth never go forth, for - the - wicked - doth compass , about the. righteous; therefore Justice goeth forth perverted.. Habakkuk did not condemn men; he counted i himself one of them. Even ng ht living men, women and children find if hard to live UP their ideals and always do the things they know are right Why? God is omnipotent; why does He not interfere? "How long shall I cry?" asks the prophet How many of us re-echo the query? ; Then ' Habakkuk decided to ; "stand upon my watch, and set ! me upon the tower, and will look forth to see what He will speak with me, and what I shall an awer concerning my complaint. . . Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no nreaui ai an m tho midst Of it "But Jehovah is in His holy temple: let all the earin Keep silent before him." v The result of Habakkuk's medi tations was that even though ovarvthin? was discouraEinr. or. as he puts it in nis poeucw riinpc: "For thoujrh the fig tree shall not flourish, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the lauor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no food; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd In the stalls: "Yet I will rejoice in Jehovah, I will Joy in the God of my sal vation. "Jehovah; the Lord, is my strength; And He maketh my feet like hinds' feet and will make ma to walk upon high places." He wanted to place the camera outsid9 the gate and take a picture of the "beautiful garden through the arbor. - But we asked for this view . , looking from the garden to the world outside. Why? Because a man can't spend his life lounging in the garden. To live, he has to face the world. - And to live nobly, he has to carry the beauty of his garden out into the wilderness. ' In our Churches we discover thi beauty of life when it is cultivated and fruitful. Then we are able to carry something of that beauty into the world. Attend Church next Sunday !
