Scripture Matthew 6.-3-17, Luke 2B:Si-62; John 2l:ir-lJ; Acts 2-3 4 1 4 V By NEWMAN CAMPBELL PETER is, in this writer's mind, a most interesting and hu man character. He was a devout, well-meaning person, devoted to his Lord, dedicated to His work, but, lik most of us, when it came to the test, he was not will- Jig to suffer with his Master. tact, when Jesus was ar rested and being tried for His life, Peter played the coward, and denied that he knew Him. That was a great tragedy, ar,d Peter himself was broken-heart-dvwhen, after three times deny ing" that he even knew the Mas ter, he heard the cock crow as isus said he would and the Master gave him one look ere he was led away. w He uttered no word of rebuke Of condemnation, for Jesus knew riis man. He understood His dis ciple so well, that He could have faith that from this moment of guilt and degradation, he wotild ?e to new heights. ' How many of us, faced with Peter's situation, would have been true to our best? Ve all with the other disciples, received the power to perform miracles and to speak with power and au thority, words which were to convert thousands, to the faith. We need not describe thia scene which has been included in many lessons the "rushing:, mighty wind" that filled the house, the cloven tongues of flame whieh sat on each one. It was Peter, with John, who performed the first miracle after Jesus left them. The two went, to the temple to pr.ay, and at the gate called Beautiful, saw a man who had been lame from birth so that he had become a beggar. He asked alms, but rotor and John had no money, and Peter said to him, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee; In the name of Chrii.l of Nazareth, rise up and walls." To the 'amazement of everyone there, the man actually ro?e, and not only walked, but leaped, and bounded into the temple to thank God for his healing "All the people" saw the nun, and doubtless told 11105-; who had MEMORY VERSE "Wc must obey God rather than men." Acts 5:29. nave alien down in less severe ! Crises than this one. To have acknowledged that he was a dis Clpje of Jesus would probably 8Ve meant death. Peter could not face this, so he lied even as you and 1 but how . nobly he fidedfned himself we Shall see ...as. . this . lesson . pro gresses. It had been but a short time iteore this that Jesus had asked tlil disciples what people said about them, and after receiving Various answers, had asked them, "Whom say ye that I am?" Peter J-the ever-ready talker had an swered fervently, "Thou art the Christ, the" Son of the Living God," and had received Jesus' Commendation. The third time Jesus appeared to His disciples after His Resur rection, He" turned to Peter and asked him if he roved Him. Peter, Of course, said yes, and Jesus said, "Ffied My lambs." Tvlce more Jesus asked the same quention, gottinj; tne same reply, and the Master said to him, "Feed My sheep." Peter thus knew he was indeed dedicated to lead Christ's work on earth. ' , . On the day of Pentecost, Peter, not been present, and word of it came to the temple authorities, and they had the two disciple3 brought before them. Peter v not afraid of martyrdom tht. He glorified in his chance to tell of Christ and His Message. Talking bf-e the high pnests and their kinuied, he freely ad mitted the performance of the miracle (which none could deny, as the man was with the disci ples), and the church authbrities decided it was best to let them go, cautioning them that they should preach no more, and threatening them. After this many miracles were performed and multitUcV- were added to' the Lord.. Pci.-r.and John were imprisoned by the church rulers, but an earthquake opened their prison and they went straightway to the temple and preached again. Brought before the temple rulers again, thry were asked why they persisted in doing what was forbidden, and Peter and the other apostles answered, "We tnust obey God rather than men," &nd that was that, until Peter at last was martyred a truly great man. Is it too much to say that the Church too is engaged in a type l ot satety engineering f l nrough the religious faith on which it is founded the Church knows that the souls of people need protec tion even more than do their eyes and limbs. The Church believes that human hearts yearn for a comfort ing arm just as human frames require safe-guarding. It believes that physical safety is not enough; that to bring peace of mind is a more important mission than to insure absence of bodily risk. As long as lives are saved from the blight of godlessness, the institution contributing to such saving is entitled.to all the encouragement and support you can give it.
