Mr. Jonathan Woody gave some helpful ideas of improving our community. New officers were elected for the 1951 year. Chairman. John Kirkpatrick; and four co-chairmen, one from each section of our com munity. Hyder Mountain, James Kirkpatrick; Center Crabtree, Mrs. Hugh Noland; Rush Fork, G. C, Palmer; Riverside will temporarily oe u. r. Nesmtt. The secretary, Mrs. Vinson Haney; treasurer, Mrs. Clarence Green; and reporter, Mrs. Eugene Wood. Since our community is so "spread out" it was decided to have a meeting in one section one month and another section another month. The next meeting will be at the Hyder Mountain church with James Kirkpatrick in charge of the program. The meetings will be held the 2nd Monday of every month. Anyone speaking of our com munity it will be just "Crabtree", the "Lower" part will no longer be on the front of it. Virgil M. Shope, 77. well-known Haywood County citiien, died at his home in the Dutch Cove sec- lion near Canton at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, following an extended illness. Mr. Shope was a native of Hay wood County, the son of Lafayette and Elizabeth Burnette Shope. Most of his lif was spent in the county. Funeral services will be held at Morning Star Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. tne Kev. Asmond Maxwell, pastor. assisted by the Rev. Horace L. Smith will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. ' Serving as active pallbearers will be Brantley Davis, K. F. Da vis. Howard Myers. Joe Sherbcrt. Roy Frady, and C. W, Hardin. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. J. Frank Pate, Floyd Miller, Wes ley Medford, Charlie Varner. T, E. Wilson, Jasper Wilson, R. L. Rhine hart, J, D. Israel, and Frank Simpson.-. The body will be returned to the home in Dutch Cove this afternoon and will remain there until the hour of the service. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mamie Davis Shope; one brother, Alonzo Shope of Asheville; and two sisters, Miss Lee Shope of Asheville and Mrs. Jessie Bowen of Sky land. Arrangements are under the di rection of Garrett Funeral Home. The revival is still going on at the Crabtree Baptist church and will continue this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Deitz of Ashe ville, were visitors here Sunday. Dance Festival Kite Flying On Canton Program The Town of Canton RecreaMonl Department is sponsoring two nw activities this week. Friday night a Junior Square Dance Festival will be held at the Canton Aimory. There will be dancing by high school and elementary school teams. There will also be contests in buck dancing, singing, stringed music, etc. .!! interested individ uals and groups arc invited to par ticipate. The program will get un der way at 8 p. m. Following the contests there will be square danc ing for all. Music for the dancing will be furnished by the Fred Car penter String Band. Saturday afternoon at 1 p. m. there will be Kite Flying Contests for boys and girls. The event will be held on the Smathers Dairy Hill in the Highland Park section of Canton.
