Basic Training Ends For Howard W. Carter Private Howard Thomas Carter of Canton, has recently completed basic training with K Company, 61st Infantry, of the famed 8th In fantry Division at Fort Jackson S. C. Private Carter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Carter of 32 Spruce Street, Canton. He was a student at Canton High School before enlist ing in the Army. During the fourteen weeks of his' training. Private Carter fired the Infantry's light weapons, took part in squad and platoon tactical problems, and underwent intensive physical conditioning. White Oak CDP Looking Forward To Thickety Visit MRS. GEORGE BORING Mountaineer Reporter Plans are being made to attend the field day, August 8 when Thick ety Community entertains White Oak Community. We 'are all look ing forward to a very enjoyable day and hope a large crowd will go. If you haven't a way to go, please wait along the road and someone will pick you up. The tour of Thickety begins at 9:30. so it will be neces sary to leave here around 8 o'clock. SAM FERGUSON Mountaineer Reporter Fines Creek Community Devel opment Program will meet Wednes day night at 8 o'clock at the Fines Creek School. Chief business of the meeting 'will e to plan for the Field Day August 10, when East Pigeon Community will be guests of Fines Creek. Decoration and Homecoming Day at Fines Creek Memorial Bap tist Church will' be held Sunday August 12. However, the dedica tion services will not be neid on that date as previously stated, but at a later date to he announevti. The old ' Fines Creek Baptist Church will be sold st auction in the near future, the proceeds to be applied on the new church. The building contains a quantity of first-class lumber. Attending the outKf-state tour from Fines Creek are Furman Nol and, Mark Ferguson, Reeves Fer guson, Mrs. Hiram Green and R. L, Justice. Vernon Ferguson, who is em ployed at Newport News, Va., is spending some time with relatives and friends on Fines Creek. Fish Fry Feature Of FHA Family Picnic Friday Farm Ownership families of the Farmers Home Administration en joyed a picnic and fish fry Friday at the Van Burnette farm on Pis- gah Creek. These families are those who have bought farms through FHA loans. This picnic was the first held in several years. Special guests for the occasion were families who paid for their farms years ahead of schedule, Farmers Home Ad ministration personnel who have at one time or another been asso dated with the County Office here and all FHA County Committee men, both past and present; Pet Dairy gave free ice cream for the entire group. ELVIRA MOORE Funeral services were held yes terday afternoon in Bethel Metho dist church for Mrs. Elvira Moore, 51. who died Thursday morning in a Farmville, Va., hospital. The Rev. Clyde Collins and the Rev. Thomas Erwin, officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers and nieces were flower . bearers. Mrs. Moore was a native of Hay wood county and had lived in Farm ville for the last eight years. Surviving are the husband, T. Ralph Moore, and a son, Thomas R. AMMONS Funeral services were held Fri day in the First Baptist Church of Canton for Walter L. Ammons, 64, who died Tuesday in his home near Canton. The Rev. H. L. Smith and the Rev. J. C. Lime officated and burial was In Long's Church Ceme tery. '-..' Active pallbearers were Wade Rhea, Logan White, W. S. Edwards, Harold Moffitt, Bill Franklin, and Howard Setzer. Members of the Champion Old Timers' 'Club of which Ammons was a member were honorary pall-' bearers. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Altha H. Ammons; three daugh ters, Mrs. E.. G. Bright and Mrs. Harvey White of Pasadena, Texas and Mrs.. Albert Sprinkle of Can ton; two sons, Robert of Sylacauga, Alabama and Walter Lee Ammons with the U. S. Army in France. Also six' grandchildren and the mother, Mrs. J. W. Thomason of Mars Hill. Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Heart Attack Is Fatal To Hoyle Smathers R. Hoyle Smathers, 47, promi nent Charlotte lawyer and former resident of Canton, died at his home in Charlotte yesterday follow ing a heart attack. Smathers, who taught in the Waynesville High School for a year after finishing college, practiced law in Asheville for several years and went to Charlotte in 1935. He also served as claims manager fof the American Mutual Insurance Company. Survivors include the wife, a son? nine brothers, Dr. Henry Smath- t ers and Dr. Way Smathers, both of " Charleston, S.
