Folk Music Will
Be Featured At
Benefit Tea
A silver tea, given jointly by
the Haywood County Library and
the Waynesville Woman's Club, will
be held in the dining room of the
First Methodist church Friday
afternoon, August 10, at 3:30
o'clock. I
Vtrgil L, Sturgill, well-known
folk singer, will present a program
on Folk Music. He will play and
sing old ballads from North Caro
lina and Kentucky and will exhibit
early musical instruments. A social
hour will follow the program.
Everyone is invited to be present.

A Food Sale will be held Satur
day morning at the new craft shop
at the south entrance to the Juna
luska Assembly, beginning at 9
o'clock. ; ' .
The sale is being sponsored by
the Junaluska P.T.A. and will fea
ture homemade cakes, pies, cook
ies, and canned fruits.

Scholarship
Active Weekend For Young
People At Long's Chapel
Malcolm Williamson,. Jr., has
been notified by the Educational
Committee of the N. C. Division of
the United Daughters of the Con
federacy that he has been awarded
the Lucy London Anderson schol
arship in the amount of $200 at the
University of North Carolina for
the year 1951-52. The scholarship
is good for each of the four years
in college in the same amount as
the first year as long as the student
maintains a good scholastic record
Malcolm was sponsored by the
Haywood Chapter of the UDC of
which Mrs. Sam Queen is presi
dent, Mrs. Dan Tompkins of SyK
va is the chairman of the N, C, div-!
ision of the United Daughters of
the Confederacy.
He was eligible to apply for the
scholarship as a lineal descendent
of a Confederate veteran. He is
the great-grandson of the Rev. Al
bert Allison James who served as
Chaplain during the war between
the States with the 18th regiment
of South Carolina Volunteers.;
Earlier in the summer Malcolm
was awarded one of the top schol
arships at Western Carolina Teach
ers College in a competitive con
test in which 95 high school seniors
from Western North Carolina com
peted. He has declined this scholar,
ship because of other plans for
his college work.
Malcolm is the son of the Rev.
and Mrs. Malcolm R. Williamson.
He graduated from the Waynesville
Township High School this past

Sunday services at Long's
Chapel Methodist Church, of w hich
Rev. Paul H. Duckwall is pastor,
will begin at 9:45 a.m. with Sun
day : School classes for all age
groups. At 11 a.m. the pastor will
give a sermon entitled: "In His

Mrs. Leonard Dotson will serve as
