Children's Choir To Sing
With Festival Chorus
At Lake Junaluska Friday
The Institute on Church Music
-now in progress at Lake Junaluska
will reach its climax Friday night
when a choral concert will be "pre
" sented at 8 p. m. under the direc
tion of Drs. Carl Mueller and Ro
berta Bitgood. The Festival Chorus
of 70 voices, made up of those in
attendance at the Institutes-will, be
- assisted by a children's choir of
' local young people.
Considerable interest is attached
."' to this first concert appearance of
the group, which has been singing
at children's vespers during the
summer. It is directed by Mrs.
Wayne White of Leesburg, Fla.,

Annual Picnic At
Camp Hope Sun.
The annual picnic of American
Legion Post 47 will be held Sun
day afternoon at Camp Hope, which
is on the Brevard road hear Cruse.
Hazel wood Veterans are planning
to attend.
Plans announced are that the
group will leave from in front of
the American Legion Hall at 2 p.
m. Anyone desiring transportation
can meet there to get it.
Supper will be served at 5 p. m.,
and everyone is requested to bring
their own picnic basket. Cold
drinks will be provided by the
Club.
All veterans are Invited to bring
lunches and join the fun.

the various seasons, such as Lent,
Easter, Thanksgiving and Christ
mas, as well as special occasions.
One of these anthems will be sung
by the children's choir alone, an
other by both choirs combined, and
the rest of the program by the Fest
ival Chorus.
The public is invited to attend
this concert, as well as the recital
by faculty and guest artists Thurs
day evening at 8 p. m and the
Hymn Festival Sunday evening at
8 p. m. All these services will be
held at the auditorium on the As
sembly grounds.
Hominy, Saunook
Field Day Hosts

This week's community field
days will end with one Friday and
one Saturday, with next week's
tours beginning on Tuesday. On
Friday Hominy Community will be
hosts to Jonathan Creek-Cove
Creek. Saturday Cruso will visit
Saunook; and on Tuesday Ratcliffe
Cove will tour Center Pigeon.
The Hominy tour will include
the new Plains Methodist Church,
as well as the homes or projects
of Vinson Worley, Willis Hipps,
Hugh Keener, F. C. Henn, Derris
Clark, Robert Holland, Wilson
Trantham, Fred Mann, Mrs. Sallle
Mann and Porter Broyles. Dinner
will be served at the Harmony
Grove; and the recreational pro
gram wil take place in Fonzo
Mann's pasture.
A new industry and a well known
one will be among the stops at Sau
nook Saturday. The group will In.
spect Hallman's ceramics, newly
established, and will later see the
Barber and Harper Eveanson or
chards. Also featured will be the
homes of James Garrett, Charles
Beck, Jarvis Allison, and the
Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church
and the State Fish Hatchery. Lunch
and recreation will be at the Sau
nook school.
On Tuesday Ratcliffe Cove visit
ors will have an opportunity to see
the first alfalfa seeded In the sec
tion, as they inspect George Smath-
ers' property in Center Pigeon.
There they will also" see examples
of strip cropping and planting of
ladino clover. Other places to be
visited are the County Home farm,
Long's Methodist Church, the new
Spring Hill Baptist Church, and the
homes or farms of Charlie Evans,
J, H. Kinsland, Jesse T. Smathers,
Ray Haynes, G. M. Harkins, Haynes
Henson and Groyer Abel. The
group will assemble at the Bethel
School and will return there for
dinner and recreation.

and family of Atlanta, Ga., have
been guests of Mr. MeCracken's
family here. Other visitors are Mr.
McCrpcken's brother from Oak
City and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert McCracken.
A total of 103 persons attended
the Hill reunion last Sunday at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Hill.

Va , and Wilson Messer, who is on
a 30-day leave from his naval sta
tion in California
Many of the singers gathered
around the piano and sang five
or six' old time hymns. Devotion

Plans were completed for ftrld
day, August 28, with Francis Cove
Community. We hope to have a
good crowd, of our own folks to
help entertain our guests. Every
family is asked to bring a well
filled picnic basket,
The "Playmates," Janie Davis
totaled 103.
The Rev. Elmer P. Carter will
hold services at the Rock Springs
Baptist Church both morning and
evening on the first and third Sundays.

Best, who has been home on a fur
lough, left Thursday to return to
his camp.
Homecoming and Decoration Day
will be held at the Mt, Zion Metho
dist Church September 2. There
will be guest speakers and special
singing. All singers in the county
and elsewhere are invited.
Homecoming used to be held at
the church every year, but several
years have gone by since one has
been held. A large crowd and "a
lot of old-timers" are expected to
attend.
Basket lunches will be brought.
Mrs. Emmie Rogers Wade of
Chapel Hill is the guest of Mrs.
Janie Love Taliaferro for two
weeks.

The Family Night program was
turned over to the Ledfords, and
Mrs. Sam Ledford acted as mistress
of ceremonies. A trio consisting
of Virginia Ledford, Marcene
Lowe, and Betty Sue Lowe opened
the program. .
A variety of games for all ages
was enjoyed. There was a balloon
race, a nose dive contest, a marble
and knife race, a toss ring game,
a mathematical game with matches,
a cracker and whistle game, a
scrambled word contest, and a
shoe scramble. This last game pro
voked the most "laughs, I believe.
Six men were blindfolded and giv
en a lady's shoe, and told to fit
it on the woman that it belonged to.
Only one man found the rigth per
son and matched the shoes. Prize
winners were Mrs. Rowe Ledford,
Teague Williams, Betty Sue Lowe,
Carl Davis, Frances Conard, Wil
son Messer, Gene Messer, George
Boring, Sam Ledford, Mrs. Joe
Davis and Mrs. France Teague,
. At the close of the program, im
agine our surprise when Mrs. Led
ford presented a lyric soprano,
Madam LaSamuelli DeLedfordia
(Sam Ledford). This was a very fit
ting ending to a well planned pro
gram, planned by the Ledfords, and
two daughters, Mrs. Jack James
and Mrs. Charlie Derrick,
The community : meeting was
then closed by singing our closing
song, "God Be With You" Re
freshments were served by the
ladies.
The next regular meeting will
be Saturday night, September 1,
with Mr. and Mrs. France Teague,
Mr. and Mrs. Sherrill Teague, and
Floyd Teague in charge.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ledford and
family, and Mr. and Mrs. Sykes
Ledford and family have been vis
iting their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Sam Ledford. With them on this
trip was Thomas Earl . Gregory.
They are all from Baciff, Texas.
Walter Lowe is still on the sick
list and under a doctor's care.

was served at noon, and the graves
were decorated. Many relatives and
friends attended.
