No such leader did de velop, so the members voted to join the Blue Ridge Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Years passed, and the member ship outgrew the old log building. A frame structure was erected down the hill, out of the cemetery, and to the south of the modern church. Still later it was twice re modeled to provide room for the growing community. Around 1866 a Rev. Fanning re organized the Church, and, there after, received her pastors through the Blue Ridge Conference. The Church grew as the years passed until in 1924 a brick building was erected. It was destroyed by fire in 1940, but within 11 months, with the aid of the Duke Foundation, an even more beautiful building arose in its place. A parsonage was added in 1948 and dedicated only last month. Rev. A. L. Maxwell now inhabits it. Today Morning Star is an active Methodist Church in the Western N. C. Conference, with 290 mem bers, 177 Church families, and a constituency in the community of 220 families. Preaching Services are held on the first, second and third Sunday mornings, and on the fourth Sunday evening. , The Church school, George W. Smathers, superintendent, has an enrollment of 300' and an average attendance of 115. Mrs. Lane Med ford is president of The Woman's Society of Christian Service, which has a membership of 40. Scout Troop 13 is sponsored , by the Church. Lenoir Smathers is scout master of the troop of 25. Membcis number 60 in the Young Adult Fellowship which is of special interest to young mar ried couples. Paul Fowler is presi dent. The Youth Fellowship meets every Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Smathers are adult counsellors to 30 members. Morning Star Methodist Church has a record that stands as a chal lenge to modern members. That challenge is being very well met.
