By NEWMAN CAMPBELL CONSIDERING the lawlessness 'of today's troubled world, it is good to give this period of our time to the re-reading of the laws which Jehovah gave to His people whom He had delivered from oppression in Egypt. Espe cially is it timely to emphasize the Ten Commandments, which are as applicable to our time as they were to the Israelites who were on their way to a life of freedom in the land the Lord had promised them. In the beginning of today's Bible reference, we are told that J c t h r o, .Moses' father-in-law, heard in Midian. the success of Moses' efforts to free his people, : and he was pleased. According to the account, Moses had sent his wife, Zipporah, and their two sops back to Midian to live with Zipporah's father while hi? and Aaron were persuading Pharaoh to permit the Israelites to leave ; Egypt. Now that the march toward Canaan had begun, Jethro brought Zipporah and her children to re join Moses. The two men met and greeted each other warmly, and the family was reunited. Moses told Jethro all that had happened and Jethro rejoiced. As far as this writer can dis cover, Moses' wife's name is not mentioned again in the Bible nar rative. In the days following the ar rival of Jethro, he saw that Moses was giving too much of his time to settling the personal affairs of the people. Jethro pro- Hethodist Church v. J. B. "And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken wc will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord." . The Lord said unto Moses, "Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee forever." This too Moses told the people. Then the Lord told Moses to have the people sanctify themselves and prepare to meet the Lord. The people made ready, and on the morning of the third day "there were thunders and light nings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trum pet was exceeding loud; so that all the people that were in the camp trembled." The people were kept from" coming too near the mount, and were cautioned not to touch any part of it or they would surely die. ' Then Jehovah gave Moses what we call the Ten Commandments, which should be remembered al ways and kept religiously. Briefly they are: "Thou shall have no other gods but me. Thou shalt not make any graven image and bow down to worship it. "Thou shalt not take the name of thy God in vain." "Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy... for in six- days MEMORY VERSE "'Teach me Thy way, O Jehovah." Psalm 21:lt. He insisted that the thing Moses was doing was not good. He had been sitting from morn ing until night listening to the people's questions and disputes. "Provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men o truth . . . he said,""ahd place such over them to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: and let them -judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge, so that they bear the burden with thee." This sage advice Moses fol lowed, relieving himself of his too heavy burdens. , . In the third month after the children of Israel were gone out of the land of Egypt, they came to the land (or -wilderness") of. Sinai. Moses went up onto the mount, and God talked to him out of the mountain, telling him what he should say to the chil dren of Israel. Jehovah reminded Moses of His deliverance of the people from Egypt. "Now therefore, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is Mine. "And ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak Unto the children of Israel." . Moses came down from the the Lord made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day. "Honor thy father end thjr mother. "Thou shalt not kill. "Thou shalt not commit tdul. tery. . "Thou shalt not steal. "Thou shalt not bear false wit ness. "Thou shalt not covet." v. All the people saw the light nings on the mount and heard the thunderings and the sound of the trumpet, and they saw the smoke on the mountain, and they were terrified, so' much so that they begged Moses to speak to them and reassure them. "But let not God speak with us,", they said, "lest we die." " Moses answered: "Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not." Many more laws Jehovah gave His people which by obeying they would please Him, Alas, how soon this chosen people disobeyed God's laws, bringing disaster on themselves! One commandment that 'God gave His people is particularly, appropriate to our time. It con cerned strangers in their land.' Many "strangers" are coming to our own country after fleeing from their native land because of Communist domination. God. said:. "Thou shalt not vex a stranger,' nor oppress him; for ye were) strangers in the land of Egypt." Based on ropvritfitcl outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, NltlMtl . The prophet Isaiah knew of it when he told the Israelites, "The Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory," The Bible has been God's Pillar of Fire to lead men and nations out of darkness into light. The chaotic blackness of the Augustan Age was shattered by the Light which came out of Israel in ful fillment of the Scriptures. In this light new faith and hope were ' born. The darkness of the Middle Ages disappeared in the bright ness of the Renaissance and the Reformation when the leaders of men searched the Scriptures and found the Light of God. Every great revival of spiritual religion has cleared the mists from human eyes and lighted man's way to peace. f.,The darkness that envelops the world today will roll away on the wings of the morning when men and nations turn back to the Bible and back to God. niE CHURCH FOR ALL ALL fob fr Vy . a,., wiurch 1...., , wt '- "ie crreoio-i i.
