Mrs. Hen ry Games and Mrs. Horace Peek met them in Pigeon Gap where the tour started. It included a com plete drive through the community and if ended at the Bethel School cafeteria where the judges, County- Agent Wayne Franklin, and Mr. Ks- quala and Mr. Eric-son of Norway, were luncheon guests. The county- agent and the two Norwegians also toured Pigeon Valley making a study of the methods of farm liv ing and the school system. At Beth el School Principal Evans explain ed some of the ways American schools are run. The staff of the school paper told about "The Echo' which proved to be of great inter est. !t f. Basketball season is now here. The Bethel Blue Demons, girls and boys, open their season Tuesday evening with Leicester on the home court. They expect a big turn-out. A new method of artificial res pirationto replace the prone pres sure method widely used for years has been adopted by the Ameri can Red Cross and other U, S. agencies, according to Dr. L M. Weir, county health officer, In charge of Red Cross first aid and water safety work in the area. The new system is known as the back pressure-arm lift method. It was adopted on the recommenda tion of the National Research Coun cil after the presentation of scien tific evidence at an Oct, 1 meeting sponsored by the Red Cross and Public Health Service. '.;.. ' . .. . Tho Herl Cross is ni-oeeed nu now to nrovide all Its chapters with In struction In this new method oi iitificinl rpsnir.itlon Regional meetings have been scheduled lhr6uahout the country for train ing of key instructors from, local chapters. : The Wayrfrsville Red Cross chap ter will be represented at a meet ing4 in Asheville this month' by Mrs. iiinei Mcuoms ..ana . rare. Frank Miller. Instructors "will come to Ashoville from Atlanta. "Evervone in Havwood county should acquire this simple know ledge that might save his or ner neighbor's life," Dr. Weir asserted. As an organization founded on the nrinrinle of neighbor-held-neigh- bor, ypur Red Cros sis here to ninno Oils itnnwledep within reacn of every citizen in the community. "The back pressure-arm mi method," Dr. Weir pointed out, "is not new. It has stood the test of years of use by Red Cross so cieties in Denmark, Norway, and countries, which have found that this improved method produced a greater ex change of air In the victim's lungs than the prone pressure meuiuu. "The basic difference is me oick lift method and the k that the former. being a two-phase operation, act ive's forces air into the lungs as ,,..,11 In pxoel it.,, , "The prone pressure method, on the other hand, forces the air out but depends on the elastic recoil of n, ,.i,pst and internal organs to bring air into the lungs. This difference is particularly impm ii. in cases of deep asphyxia, such as ,ir,ht vp rnncrH hv nerve gas." Other agencies adopting the oacic m-essure-arm. lift method at this the Armed Forces American Telephone and Telegraph Co., Bureau of Mines, Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, the American Medical Association, Federal Civil Defense Administration, Girl Scouts, Public Health Service of the Federal Security Agency, and the YMCA.
