The Christian's Use of Possessions HOW MATERIAL WEALTH MAY BE USED FOR GOOD Scripture?Luke lt:16-Z3: I Timothy 6:1-19. If NEWMAN CAMPBELL THE SUBJECT of money and uses is a most timely one in ll era of high wages and sal la, work for everyone who is b bodied, if one wishes it, and [b prices, high taxes, huge gov iment debts, etc. Is it a time fcontentment and happiness? It would not seem so. Wars ke the lives of our fine young *; crime is rampant, grumb (is heard on every side. Our lesson contains a parable Jesus' which we have studied lore, but which is always inter ring and instructive. Jesus told out a man who probably had ifhed hard all his life. He seems h*ve been a good man?honest, far as we know. He is simply H "A certain rich man," that ill His work had been rewarded; 1 tarns were overflowing with iteous harvests, so much sof t his problem was to find a *ce to store them. He sat pondering what to do, il he resolved to tear down his I barns, build larger ones and ? sit back at ease and enjoy i wealth. He doesn't seem to have ?ojht at all about those who first advice to them was concern ing servants and their masters, and how they should treat each other. In a world where "servant" usually meant "slave," the serv ants are counseled not to despise their masters, but to honor them. Masters and servants should re member that they are brethren in Christ, and treat each other ac cordingly. "Perverse disputing of men of corrupt minds and destitute of truth, supposing that gain is god liness, from such withdraw thy self," he writes. Paul knew that there was much disputing in Ephesus?false doc trines were being preached which might turn men's minds away from Christ and His redemption. Godliness is good?"godliness with contentment is great gain," he writes. Coming into the world naked and helpless, we also go out of this world in the same condition, "having food and raiment let us be therewith content. "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in de struction and perdition. "For the love of money is the MEMORY VERSE for Ike lore of money is a root of all kinds of eril; toMcfc wmr reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and w ficrccd themselves through with many sorrows. ?/ Timothy 6:10. CM be poor and hungry, whose *wty he might relieve and still w plenty for himself. He felt had labored for this day when seed no longer work. He was 1 a wicked man?only selfish; | thought only of himself. | However, he was reckoning fhout the possibility that death Iht be near?and what. then become of his huge barns rich harvests? That very ft he would die. God said, Jw fool, this night thy soul rte required of thee; then [ P** shall those things be, which f hast provided?" Jesus laid, "So is he that layeth ?treasure for himself, and is not P toward God." Pen if this certain rich man ] P lived, would taking his ease | r^ng. drinking and making I rp~have brought him con sent? It is to be doubted. ? Ask the children if their ?nces have been raised and *il made them happier, or P't make them want more things? ** re'urn to Paul's ad Timothy and the church ? at Ephcsus. Paul wor his people there. His t^opynsM.-d mini - * root of all evil; which, while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced them selves through with many sor rows. "But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast pro fessed a good profession before many witnesses." "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gaveth us richly all things to en joy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communi cate; laying up in store for them selves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life." Is this a difficult lesson for children to learn? I think not. The teacher has excellent material here to teach the children to think of others and to share with them and so learn to be unselfish. Not the possession of money or treasures is harmful, but too great love of money and the hoarding of it is sinful and brings nothing but misery. Even though his pillow doesn't keep him from falling, it does cushion his falls . while he learns how to balance himself, how to stroke, and swing. j It will be that way with his life, too? 9K and yours. As you grow older you often \ feel the need of something to cushion j yourself against the jolts that come sud denly in everyday living. Since you learn to skate only by skat ing, and to live only by getting into the thick of life, you have to expect these mishaps. If you cushion yourself with the true knowl edge of God and His ever-present love and watch ful care, you will fe^l these blows less. THE CHURCH FOR ALL... ALL FOR THE CHURCH " The Chufch is the greatest {actor on earth lor the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a I strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization I can survive. There are four sound reasons why I every person should attend services regularly and support the Church They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support Plan to go to church regu larly and read your Bible daily.
