Snacks count, too. | because boys and girls need the warm feeling of having Mother wel come them with a treat, ready to listen to anything they want to tell her about the day's happenings be fore they're off again for before supper outdoor play. A crunchy red apple to bite into! A juicy orange! A crisp cookie full of brown sugar, spice and everything nice! A chunky slice of oatmeal quick bread, stud ded with dates or flgs! Frosty glas ses of milk! Snacks like these tast ed. good when the first little red schoolhouse was built, and they still do. You'll like the variations sug gested with both these recipes be cause they give you leeway to use whatever happens to be in the house, and they also make Interest ing taste changes, n BROWN SUGAR COOKIES Ingredients: 2 cups sifted flour, 14 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tea spoon salt, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, V4 teaspoon allspice,.34 cup short ening, IVi cups firmly packed brown sugar, 1 egg, V4 cup light corn syrup, 1V4 teaspoons vanilla, V4 cup buttermilk, cups ready to-eat bran, Vfe cup coarsely chop ped walnuts. Method: Sift together flour, bak ing soda, salt, cinnamon and all spice. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, corn syrup and vanilla; beat well. Stir in sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk; stir in bran and wal nuts. Drop by level tablespoonfuls, a few Inches apart, onto greased baking sheet. Bake in moderate (375 F) oven 12 to 15 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen cookies. MINCEMEAT COOKIES: Pre pare Brown Sugar Bran cookies, as above, adding 2/3 cup moist mince meat with bran and walnuts. CANDIED FRUIT COOKIES: Prepare Brown Sugar Bran Cookies as above, adding 1 cup mixed can died fruits with bran and walnuts. OATMEAL QUICK BREAD Ingredients: 2 cups sifted flour, 2Vfc teaspoons baking powder, >/? teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt. Mi cup sugar, 1 cup quick cooking rolled oats (uncooked), IMi cups buttermilk, 2 tablespoons butter or margarine (me'*ed). Method: Sift together flour, bak ing powder, baking soda, salt and sugar. Stir in rolled oats. Add buttermilk and melted butter; mix only enough to moisten dry ingre dients well. Bake in greased loaf pan (about 8Mi by 4Mi by 2Mi inches) in moderate (350 F) oven 55 minutes or until cake tester in serted in center comes out clean. Turn out on rack to cool. Store overnight in tightly covered tin container before slicing about Mi inch thick. Or bake in greased muf fin pans until tester inserted in center comes out clean; time will depend on size of muffins. DATE BREAD OR MUFFINS: Add 1 cup chopped dates with the rolled oats, FIG BREAD OR MUFFINS: Add % cup diced figs and Mt cup coarse ly chopped walnuts with rolled oats. Being "good neighbors" paid off for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shields, farmers near here. Mr. and Mrs. Shields both were suffering from tuber culosis. They had to go to a sani torium for two years so they put their household goods and farm equipment up for sale at auction. Auctioneers donated their ser vics and friends and neighbors got together to push bids to levels that were amazingly'high. In addition ?he neighbors bought $1,100 in Xj 5. bonds for the Shields' two daughters. Nancy, 8, and Jo Ann, 6. who will live with their mater nal grandparents. Neighbors said the Shields long have been active in organizing "good neighbor' 'activity for other farm families.
