VARIATIONS on oatmeal quick bread iood for snacks
By CECILY BROWNSTONE
Associated 1 ress Food Editor
After-schooi snacks are important
for growing youngsters, nutrition
ists agree, because many boys and
girls who work and play hard
quickly use up the energy mealtime i
food provides. Snacks count, too. |
because boys and girls need the
warm feeling of having Mother wel
come them with a treat, ready to
listen to anything they want to tell
her about the day's happenings be
fore they're off again for before
supper outdoor play.
A crunchy red apple to bite
into! A juicy orange! A crisp
cookie full of brown sugar, spice
and everything nice! A chunky
slice of oatmeal quick bread, stud
ded with dates or flgs! Frosty glas
ses of milk! Snacks like these tast
ed. good when the first little red
schoolhouse was built, and they
still do.
You'll like the variations sug
gested with both these recipes be
cause they give you leeway to use
whatever happens to be in the
house, and they also make Interest

Good Neighbors
CLARINDA, la. <AP) ? Being
"good neighbors" paid off for Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Shields, farmers
near here. Mr. and Mrs. Shields
both were suffering from tuber
culosis. They had to go to a sani
torium for two years so they put
their household goods and farm
equipment up for sale at auction.
Auctioneers donated their ser
vics and friends and neighbors got
together to push bids to levels that
were amazingly'high. In addition
?he neighbors bought $1,100 in Xj
5. bonds for the Shields' two
daughters. Nancy, 8, and Jo Ann,
6. who will live with their mater
nal grandparents.
Neighbors said the Shields long
have been active in organizing
"good neighbor' 'activity for other
farm families.
