Arrangements were under the direction of Garrett Funeral Home Branson Rites Held Saturday In Canton Funeral services for Charles Howard Branson. 55, prominent Canton businessman for many years, who died Thursday at 2 a.m. in an Asheville hospital after a long illness, were held Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Canton Central Meth odist Church. The Rev W. Harold Groce offi ciated and burial was in Bon-A Venture Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, the former Miss Martha Wells; one brother. B. Lester Branson of Asheville; a nephew, B. L. Bran son, Jr.. of Atlanta, Ga ; and a niece, Mrs. Clarence Glover of Spartanburg. S. C. Branson was born in Charlotte July 27, 1898. the son the late C. H. and Alice Bolen Branson and came to Canton in^ 1921 and established an automobile concern. Sports and athletic activities were his hobbies. He was a mem ber of Pigeon River Lodge No. 386. AF and AM. the Canton Lions Club and Waynesvllle Lodge No. 1769. BPOE. and was a volunteer fireman for 35 years. Branson operated the Dodge Plymouth agency In Canton as well as the Branson Insurance Agency. He formerly owned and operated the Canton city buses. Owner of considerable real es- ' tate holdings In Haywood County, he was co-owner with his brother, the late F. E. Branson, of the As ton Apartments in Asheville. Wells Funeral Home was In charge. Woods Held Without Bond For Killing Sheriff Demos Woods, 56. is being held in the Swain county jail, without bond, charged with the first degree murder of Sheriff Griffin C. Mld dleton on July second. Woods was given a hearing last week-end before Justice of the Peace James A. Turpin. Only one witness. Sgt. T. A. Sandlin. of the State ltighway Patrol, was heard. Sgt Sandlin told the court of the statement which Woods signed on July 4th. as he was being held in the Haywood County jail after his arrest on Wolf Mountain, about 24 hours after the shooting. I Want Ada bring quick results Sentence Is Suspended With Fine On Speeder By Park Official Ernest Lee Welch, of Bryson City, former deputy sheriff of Swain County, was brought before the U. S. Commissioner at the Hanger Station in the Smoky Mountain National Park Friday on a charge if driving under the in fluence of liquor, speeding and reckless driving. ^ Welch was convicted of the speeding charge and sentenced to 60 days. The sentence was sus pended on the payment of S50 and costs with the proviso that he was not to violate ahy of the park laws for the next two years. The heating was the result of as wild chase by Park Hangers Bun day. August 30, of .Welch's black Pontiac from Newfound Gap tc Maggie where Patrolman Dayton joined in and followed the car until It wrecked on Jonathan's Creek when It hit a pick-up truck. There two men passengers grabbed hags end escaped through a cornfield while Welch remained In the car. An investigation is still being made of the papers and knife with blood, on them in the trunk of the. car and thought to be used in the killlAg of a bear.
